Melvin Jones (Washington-Marion @ DeRidder)

Biggest impression so far is that Melvin, after kicking PAT, then kicked off for a touchback. As middle linebacker, he clearly calls out adjustments for the defense. He has run the wildcat without much variety. He simply carries for 7-8 yards, often on a sweep. 4th Q and WM leads 14-7.

He's deinitely a legit 250(was close to 270 at camp this summer) but I hear he's more like 6'3. Either way plenty of size.

DeRidder claimed the lead 15-14 with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the game. WM had 3rd down and about 30 yards to go. Melvin Jones lines up in slot position. Jones caught the pass about 15 yards beyond line of scrimmage and rumbled for a TD.

Jones doesn't appear fast, but on that pass reception and the previous sweeps from the wildcat he showed he could run "fast enough."

At LSU he will probably play MLB, but now I wonder if he might possibly play FB similar to how JC Copeland has this year.

Jones could play about 6 positions in college depending on what he would focus on. He could be a LB, DE, DT, TE, H-Back, or Fullback.

His coach said he had to cut a lot of weight just to get back down to 250. He is a perfect fit as an OLB for a 3-4 at this very moment. It's hard for me to imagine that he won't put his hands on the ground at LSU unless his body just decides to quit growing.

This is the first post I've seen where someone thought he wouldn't be a linebacker at LSU. Not saying you're wrong, just the first I've heard of it.

Like said above, he will cut weight and be a LB.

From everything that I have read, the staff told him that they are looking at him strictly at linebacker. Right now he is a huge fellow and is currently bigger than any LB on the current LSU roster. I assume he is around 16 or 17 years old and it is apparent that it takes effort from him to keep his weight down at such a young age. Nature and common sense tells me that he isn't going to stop growing anytime time soon. He may not get much taller, but his body should continue to fill out for another 4 years or so. Having a 270 pound MLB with great agility in Chavis' 4-3 would be interesting to see though.

That's what pretty much everything I've ever read on Jones said. I'm more or less trying to figure out where he got the idea that he was going to play on the D-Line.

That's just speculation due to his natural size. I think his position won't actually be determined until he gets to training camp. Of course he will get a shot at LB first but you have to consider the staff signed 1 guy for the entire D-line in the last recruiting class and 6 linebackers.

I've been saying since before he got an LSU offer that he would be the next Chuck Wiley. He could cut weight, but if you look at his frame, he's carrying most of his weight in his lower body, and if his upper body just fills out to match, he'll be in the 290 range. He's so damn athletic that I think even adding weight wouldn't diminish his ability.

Jones finished with 11 carries 80 yards 1 TD, 1 pass for 48 yards-the winning score, punted, tackled, and kicked two extra points, and ran a 2-pt conversion. Fontenot(25-34-1)spread the ball around as Barbe beat Carencro 41-37. DeSean Smith finished with 3 for 62 and Trey Quinn caught 12 for 126. At the end of the game Carencro was on the 21 yard line and had a few attempts at the end zone but Quinn was put into the lineup as a DB to help preserve the victory. Fontenot also had 15 carries for 71 yards and the winning score. I have always viewed him as a baseball player but I can now envision him as a SEC football player.

Louisiana Top 30 Prospects 2013
Jimmy Smith wrote a few months ago that Melvin Jones is larger, stronger, and more athletic than Kendell Beckwith. At other times in TSW posts, because Jones had gained weight (reported to LSU camp at 271 pounds), Smith speculated that Jones might grow into a lineman. Smith's reporting is based on actually seeing these prep players.

Because LSU converted JC Copeland from DT to FB who not only blocks but carries and catches passes, the thought is there -- might Jones have the size and skillset to play FB and TE at LSU?

I'd rather see him get a shot at a premium position such as a pass-rusher. He's a bit too lengthy to play FB and receiving TE doesn't seem like a position that needs to be stocked up on this type of offense especially with Desean Smith and possibly Deondre Skinner coming in.

re: Melvin Jones (Washington-Marion @ DeRidder)

He was in the 270s at LSU camp in JULY -- 3 months ago.

3 months later (OCTOBER) he is back in the 240s.

At the LSU camp, Jimmy Smith observed that Jones was still a great athlete at the heavier weight.

Discussions about his weight can be silly. Let's just appreciate his skill-set and be excited that he's going to be special at LSU...at one position or more/another.
