| HOw to denote progress and success in education now has a new twist (Posted on 10/13/12 at 3:22 pm)
The Florida state board of education has come up with a novel approach to the problem, race based requirements will be instituted by 2018. Asian have to score the highest, then caucasians, next up Latinos and then the African American community. The percentile differences betwenn the highest and the lowest is twenty percent. Education problem now fixed, everybody gets to graduate on time.

The Florida State Board of Education passed a plan that sets goals for students in math and reading based upon their race. On Tuesday, the board passed a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, it wants 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. For math, the goals are 92 percent of Asian kids to be proficient, whites at 86 percent, Hispanics at 80 percent and blacks at 74 percent. It also measures by other groupings, such as poverty and disabilities, reported the Palm Beach Post.
quote:
the Florida Department of Education said the goals recognize that not every group is starting from the same point and are meant to be ambitious but realistic. As an example, the percentage of white students scoring at or above grade level (as measured by whether they scored a 3 or higher on the reading FCAT) was 69 percent in 2011-2012, according to the state. For black students, it was 38 percent, and for Hispanics, it was 53 percent. In addition, State Board of Education Chairwoman Kathleen Shanahan said that setting goals for different subgroups was needed to comply with terms of a waiver that Florida and 32 other states have from some provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. These waivers were used to make the states independent from some federal regulations.
Wow. I need to process this.

If I was Black I'd be insulted. If I was Asian I'd be pizzed. This is bull shite.

You are presenting this in a deceptive manner. What the goals are stating is improvement goals. Each percentage represents an increase in that demo. Not saying I agree or disagree with it, but you seem to be presenting it as acceptable score ranges.

There was a movie based upon the success of one math teacher in the LA school district to get a group of what would be considered the social misfits of the community to succeed in calculus in high school twenty odd years ago. The movie should be inspiration to those people that yearn to improve the lives of thier students. Alas the system has been so corrupted by politics and union influence that all drown in the cesspool like morass called a school. I can't remember the author of the book I read twenty plus years ago but it was a blueprint for the failure of education in America and the fact that it would lead to a fracturing of society as a whole as it progressed, as the ideas that certian bits of knowledge were the very things that gave America a sense of interconnectivity across the land would no longer be considered of importance across the land.

OK which makes more sense: “To expect less from one demographic and more from another is just a little off-base,” Juan Lopez, magnet coordinator at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Riviera Beach, told the Palm Beach Post. “To expect the same from each demographic is just a little off-base,” ********** Crazy is expecting equal outcomes from disparate groups. Crazy is claiming every child will be ready for college. Florida is putting its toe into reality, they aren't requiring equal outcomes and dumbing down the Asians to perfom like blacks. They are setting goals based upon cognitive ability.

I understand this mindset, but at the same time we are officially educating/tracking according to race now. It's hard to tell whether we're moving forward or backward now.

What does that mean? Racial outcomes, distributions, incentives, rewards, phony statistics have been part of education for decades. What actually bothers you in this report?

Cultural Literacy was more of an Encyclopedia/Dictionary of cultural events/icons/concepts etc., than a blueprint of anything as I recall.

Equal access to educational resources yet separate educational standards and expectations. Seems very familiar to me. Highlighting differences in our society seems like a great recipe to promote division.

I saw nothing in the article about standards,

Fill me in what is that similar to?

Concealing differences seems like a great recipe to promote failure and generate anger. Are you under the impression blacks in general can compete with Asians or White People in academics?
