| Killed my first snow nose/frosted/old fox squirrel yesterday (Posted on 10/13/12 at 6:16 am)
is he worthy of a mount? If so, what can I expect to pay? Any suggestions on a taxidermist in the West Feliciana/Baton Rouge area?

Why sure you could have him mounted!! I've shot a few over the years, and the are no doubt cool to look at.We always called them ''Blazed Faced'' but the are actually called, Bachman's Fox Squirrel. Get you a piece of cypress drift wood and clean it up ,they really look nice and would make your squirrel look awesome.I think the going rate is $75-$125, but not 100% on that. Congrats on the kill..

Nice I hadn't seen a Bachman since I was a kid hunting in Tangy parish in the 70's. But then I don't work the squirrels that hard anymore. I mounted one back then but it was a amateur/bad mount and ended up in the trash. I would mount it, especially if you have a place to display it. And post some better pics.

What th' hell IS that....some kind of FrankenSquirrel? Never seen one like that. I'd normally say having a squirrel mounted is a waste of time and money, but that's pretty unique. I'd do it.

The pic is blocked at work, but I know what kind of squirrel you're talking about. There's a few parishes north of the lake that have them. I've only SEEN one, and couldn't get a shot on him. I'd mount him for sure.

I shot one like that by Bayou Sara/Solitude a couple decades ago. Cool looking squirrel. I wish I had mounted that one cause I've never seen another one.

Got lots of em here. One has a nest about 75 feet from the house. They're fairly common here on Clinch Mountain. Their color changes a little bit as the weather gets colder.

That looks like one of them Rodents of Unusual Size. Did you bag him in the Fire Swamp?

I didn't know they weren't that widespread? We used to kill them while squirrel hunting in South Alabama when I was a kid. They preferred the pine forests, where the greys preferred the hardwoods. Even up here, they are found more with the pines than the greys are. Pretty common, and yes, they are pretty. We've got a few solid black ones. Now they are a lot more rare than the bald faced ones.

Don't know where fire swamp is. Bagged him 500 yards outside the back door off a gravel road in an oak tree in West Feliciana just south of Sillman. Killed two Greys along with him in a span of 5 minutes in the same stand of oaks. I love working out of the house. Two items I welcome your input (everyone) on, please: 1. How do is store him until I get him mounted? Currently he's in a ziploc in freezer. 2. Any suggestions on a Taxidermist in West Feliciana/Baton Rouge area?

I've never laid eyes on a Bachman's up here in the NW corner of the state. Jealous. Would love to kill a squirrel that big.
