Turnpike's more traditional country. They are my favorite band and definitely doing it better than anyone else out there, but I don't know that I'd call them alternative. Reckless Kelly Micky & the Motorcars

Well when I think alt country I think of bands that dont fit into the Nashville mold..... So if it's country and I enjoy it it's alt country

Jason boland most certainly needs a mention As well as Ryan Bingham. His early work is damn near impossible to beat.

For the longest time I thought he was Townes van zant come again and I was in love. His more recent stuff, while good, has not lived up to my expectations.

Check out John Fullbright. He's more folk/country but he is really incredible. He was an original member of Turnpike (he actually wrote most of "Every Girl"...he hit a roadblock and let Evan finish it) and his voice and lyrics are both just really beautiful. I can't link because I'm on my phone, but for starters check out: Gawd Above All the Time in the World Satan & St. Paul Me Wanting You

I think I would put Kasey Anderson on the list. I get a Steve Earle sort of vibe from him. Also Frontier Ruckus and Two Cow Garage.

You might check out Gangstagrass, which plays a fusion of bluegrass and rap. They do the theme song for Fx network's "Justified ".

American Aquarium & DBT, like you said. No one really rocks the southern genre like they do though, so you'll probably be disappointed in trying to find anyone that captures their sound. Turnpike Troubadours Bingham (disregard his last album, also look into his unreleased stuff from Wishbone Saloon) William Clark Green Reckless and Micky Lost Immigrants McMurtry Kasey Anderson Adam Carroll Charlie Hager & The Captain Legendary Band Justin Townes Earle Cory Morrow Chris Knight Hayes Carll Shooter Jennings (all more "country" oriented)
