Nice. I've been trying to get more into it and try to practice more and get better, but it's difficult to do while still focusing on school.

How long have you been playing? Just play whatever when you have free time. Leave the guitar next to the couch and just tool around on scales during commercials. A song that really helped me learning early on was Change by Blind Melon. It uses several common chord structures that help build up your strength and muscle memory. I'm sure other people could suggest others.

I dunno, I think a lot of stuff sucks... I typically dont go out of my way to point it out...

To some people music is what they listen to in their car from point a to point b... others, its simply to dance to... me, its a large part of my life and was a common ground for most of the people ive become great friends with over the past 25 years...

Same here. That said, a lot of my really good friends are HUGE Smashing Pumpkins fans. Another band that I don't like much but can respect (not teh B0lly, though).

I can't really remember exactly how long, but I think it's been at least 6 or 7 years. When I started out I thought practicing scales and whatnot was boring and now that I want to practice that kind of stuff to get better I don't have much time to do so.

I will say that the game Rocksmith is a really helpful tool for people who already know how to play to get better at it.

But how can it be wrong? They heard it. They enjoyed it. By your definition, it is quality to them. Unless you deny the possibility of each person to have their own ability to gauge quality. You are the Only One who can.

That statement was meant to be taken somewhat in jest. They aren't wrong; they are quite right. And I am happy that they are enjoying music, even if it isn't music that I enjoy.

But from a solipsistic perspective, they are wrong. I can't hear what they're hearing, and all I have are my own ears.

I have never seen it, actually. I just checked it out and I may end up buying it. I always hated training videos because I end up rewinding more than I do playing guitar.

I think you're correct whenever you are saying music means a lot to people. As you said, hearing certain songs can you give an emotional experience, positive or negative. But who is the ultimate critic to you whenever it comes to music? I would assume it is you. At least it is for me. I can read a music critic, and he may be gushing over a band. But I hate it. To me it's not good music. The bands I enjoy the most are going to be seen as the best to me. Do I think they should be seen as the best to everyone else? Absolutely not. Music is more subjective than most things.

re: Best Current Rock Band?

See, this shows that you put more value on music than just the sound of it and whether you enjoy it. Remove yourself from the statement and read it again. Look at that reflexive hatred of "hipsters", despite no one having brought it up. Look at the details you provided to this Other. There is obvious resentment of this fictional construct, and it is based on his presumed musical preferences. That's fascinating to me.

I do. I love music. And I can't play an instrument, and I can't sing, so I have no idea how the sausage is made, but man it tastes good. Except for the stuff that tastes terrible. Hold on, you thought that tasted good? [insert hypothetical conversation]

But, yeah, I find it really fascinating how music actually has an effect on me. I concentrate better with EDM or classical playing. When I hear a really good dance song, I can't help but start moving to the beat -- I might be doing a shoulder shake while I type this. If I'm at the gym, I might toss up a few extra reps if "Bombs Over Baghdad" is playing. Etc. etc. etc.

And I am very interested in hearing in the ways that others respond to music and to what music they respond to. I don't think people are lying when they insist that they legitimately love the Beatles. They're feeling the music just like I might be feeling Outkast or Passion Pit or Sander Van Doorn or freaking Sublime or Led Zeppelin or Van Morrison or whatever floats my boat or finds my lost remote.

I do find it hard to articulate why I like music, or to try to describe how music sounds. So, maybe some aspects of it are completely binary: I like the way that sounds...end of analysis.* But it isn't all like that. Music is a societal common denominator. It's very interesting, and on multiple different levels.

So even though I'm fixing to log off...rest assured I'll be back...and the Beatles will still be overrated when I return.

*It's for this reason that I think music reviews are mostly gibberish and I give them zero weight.**

**To be fair,, Lester Bangs' review of "astral weeks" was pretty awesome.

re: Best Current Rock Band?

quote:

Damn, I am really out of the loop when it comes to rock. I thought it would never happen, but I was a child of the 80's and started high school in 1990 and graduated from college in 1999.

That was just an amazing time for rock (if you don't know why I feel sad for you). I was also raised by my parents on classic rock from the 60's and 70's.

Anyway, of all the bands listed I have heard of very few and have only heard music from the Foo Fighters which formed in 1994, and just recently announced they are "taking a break" for an unspecified amount of time......so I don't really consider them as "current" as the other bands.

Around 1997 or 1998 "new rock" played on the radio just started to suck for the most part (talking about the new bands coming out, not the ones like Foo Fighters etc.). So, at some point I said frick it and just started listening to classic rock radio and all my old CD's (yes I bought over 500 CD's in the late 80's and throughout the 90's).

So I just listened to The Gaslight Anthem song - "45" on Youtube and while not a bad song, I found with just one listen nothing particularly original or different about the song. Just sounded like most of the generic songs I've heard from time to time over the last 10 years or so.

So frick me, I'm only 36 and really enjoy rock music. I tried to like the "indie rock" for a while (Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, etc.) but I just can't force myself to enjoy music I don't like.

I realized I have rambled on here and if you've read this much try and help this old man (when you are 36 you won't feel that old, trust me) find some good new rock. List the best songs you can think of and not just throw out band names. Try and pick songs that are "original", "different", etc. I will listen to suggestions and try to get into "new rock" again. Thanks.

Our story is the same. We are also the same age.

Listen to The Sword. Start off with Warp Riders, then get Gods of the Earth then Age of Winters. In that order. I love that shite. New album in a few weeks too.

Also going see them live in BR at the end of November. Can't freakin wait.

I heard one of their new tracks two weeks ago and it jams.

I wasn't much of a metal fan until the past 10-12 years either, but like the poster I quoted, I ended up going to something else bc rock since roughly 1998 just plain sucks.

I like Mastadon now as well. I've also recently got a hold to the entire collections of Megadeth, Metallica, and Iron Maiden. I never listened to Maiden until about a year ago. Now I'm kicking myself in the ass. I love that shite.

Oh, and Megadeth. I love 13. Also just listended to United Abominations and The System Has Failed Us for the first times as well and I love those also.

I do draw the line with some metal though. If the singer grunts or growls, I'm out.

For the most part I agree. Although I make exceptions for bands like Isis, and Sunn O))). Even some Wolves in the Throne Room I can enjoy. I guess I'm listening to metal it's got to a drone/doom or sludge feel to it.

Rock does not suck now:

Circa Survive
Porcupine Tree
Fair to Midland
Mew
Murder By Death
Team Sleep
the list goes on.

Start exploring, fellas. Good rock is alive, but it doesn't get promoted. Clear Channel owns America's "taste."

Been listening to All Get Out- The Season a lot lately. Not classic rock sounding, but a good rocking album.

Anyone else heard them?

Porcupine Tree is the only one on that list I semi-like. I tried listening to a few songs by each of those other bands and just couldn't do it. Respectable, though.

Sports and music are totally different though. People don't always root for the best teams/players (e.g. Ole Miss fans). They have a wide variety of reasons to root for certain teams. In music, why would your favorite be anything other than what you think is the best or what you enjoy the most?

Plus in sports there are objective measures than can pretty much prove who the better player/team is. That isn't the case for music.

Screw your analogy but I agree with what you are saying.
Secondly I couldn't care less what the damn music snobs think about certain bands due to them "selling out" and I'm a bit of a snob. I like what I like and don't give a shite what others say. Oh and The Black Keys IMO or anything with Jack White.
