Okay...it is the okina. Which apparently is an upside down apostrophe that implies a break...
Okay...
But they are using English letters and spelling...
I'm confused.
And the Hawaiians had no written language before western contact.
So...

Looks like it started in the 50's.
There because it is part of the written form of the language
It means a small pause; the small pause can change the entire meaning of the word.

Best advice I have is don't even worry about Hawaii. These fricks do a bunch of senseless shite.
Hate the people here, completely worthless an lazy, nice place to visit. shite to live at.
