No, he was the youngest in his class. Then he skipped 4th grade and is now in 5th grade. So he is 4th grade age in 5th grade. But he was the youngest 4th grader since his birthday is right before the cut off date.

My daughter started on meds when she was 8. I am a physician and I prescibe these meds so I am well aware of their effects and side effects. She went from c's and d's to straight A's. Made a huge difference. 4 is way to young for amphetamines. Sometimes meds are needed for children that are truly uncontrollable. However, it is a rare situation. But, sometimes it's unavoidable. Can't speak for this instance, but don't judge without all of the facts.

I'm not saying that the child isn't ADHD quite the contrary I believe she actually is. However I feel like 4 is entirely too young, my parents can control her when she's over there so she's obviously not "uncontrollable".

15 or 16 should be the MINIMUM age kids get prescribed ADHD medication. shite messes with their little minds.

Yes...4 is tooo young for stimulant meds. I cannot think of a single situation that it would be appropriate at that age. There are other meds that can be used that aren't as dangerous, but at this age, it's rare that any should be given. I would recommend they get a full evaualtion by an expert before medicating. Alot of FP's will just give into pressure from the parents and prescribe. Leaving it up to the specialists can take the pressure off of them. Unless they are just doing it for the money. Can't say that doesn't happen.

And you have the training and education to determine this? According to the FDA and every major pediatric organization it had a definate benefit and there is little evidence of long term issues when used APPROPRIATELY.
Would you rather children who really need these meds be denied them? Let them flounder in school and fall behind only to be labled as stupid or a trouble maker. Education builds upon itself. If they fall too far behind, they may never catch up. Are they overused? Yes! Too often they are used as chemical babysitters. But, they do have a definate benefit in those children that truly need them.

But for every kid who truly needs them how many medicated "normal" kids are there who think that they need a stimulant to function and be "normal"?

If non-medicinal routes have not been tried, they should be. My daughter that takes meds had behavioral issues and the school wanted her medicated then. It's an easy way out for them. We opted for modifications in how our child was punished and how the teacher reacted and handled the situtation. Initially, we saw no benefit. My suspicion was that our orders weren't being followed. We then asked for and got a video camera in the room. Like magic, everything suddenly got better. Not just with our child, but with several other "problem" children.

That's Along the lines of what I've tried to recommend to them. I can't talk to them about it though they won't listen and I lose my temper too quick.

Alot. I can't argue that. We have an epidemic of people thinking there is a pill to fix everything. In addition, school days are longer. Kids get less recess to burn off excess energy, and they are getting an ever increasing workload. Most of it is bull shite. However, more and more kids are needing medication just to keep up. Streamlining education and letting kids be kids would correct many of the problems. Unfortunately, that's not gonna happen.

Which is why I lose my temper. I just want her to have the chance to just be fricking four.

See if they will a least to a more formal eval at a credible facility. As a physician, I would DEMAND a second opinion in a situation like this before I'd medicate a child this age. Even then, I personally would refuse to prescribe it.
