Further, once a year I would make each state have a drawing where one teenage boy and one teenage girl were chosen at random to be sent to the capitol where they would join the boy and girl from each of the other states in a fight to the death until only one person remained. I would also make this fight mandatory viewing.

Would probably tailgate before the main event. Would be cool if that had some public lashings as a pre game warm-up.

Meh, I've seen someone die before so I wouldn't be that interested in being there to witness.

Yep. But based on his posting history... Hence the yes and no. I am obliged to add that "The Hunger Games" is a cheap rip off of "Battle Royale".

Still, unless the poster's grandfather is REALLY old, he probably didn't attend a public hanging.
He was born in 1890, and lived in a very violent St. Tammany Parish.

Yeah. Used to be a big form of entertainment in many communities little over a century ago. Some even had dinner on the grounds and a gospel singing before the "main event". Women and children were even there.

I believe the last PUBLIC hanging was in the 1850s
No, according to documented history there was an attempted one (botched) in Verda at the turn of the century. Close to 10,000 turned out for it. Documentation was in "The History of Grant Parish"

No, firecrackers on the ant hill was more fun. Magnifying glass was too boring.
