re: Would you go to a public hanging?

No even if it was my child. I would try to end that person myself and feel like a failure if i couldnt. Thats why i would actually vote for that guy who shot the dude in BR airport back in the 80's. That was justice. As for a big public turn out, maybe, but im willing to bet only once for most folks. Now a gladiator battle like in roman days yes. Convicted rapist and murders and child molesters having to fight for their lives on a monthly basis would be great. Then maybe after so many wins a running man like prize at the end, dead and stuffed in a locker room somewhere. Ok maybe extra laundry privileges.

he's not talking about hanging a "colored boy" because he looked the wrong way at a white woman

For first time convicted criminals, it ought to be required that they witness an execution. If that doesn't deter them, then the next group can witness theirs.

Observing a legal, public hanging of somebody convicted of a capital crime is tantamount to lynching? I thought lynching was an extra-legal act whereby somebody is hanged without the benefit of due process. Silly me...

does he have a picture with the body still hanging in the tree?

Seems like it would be par for the course.

I'd go to one of they dropped the accused from a gallows. Quick death, broken neck.

But not if the swung him off the back of a horse. Slow death, suffocation.

Yeah but its a double edge sword. Someone will always be impoverished because they refuse to better themselves. Even if you live in a world where everyone is on the same level there will always be violent crime. Jealousy, greed or crime of passion. These crimes will always be around because you cant eliminate them with social programs and reform.

re: Would you go to a public hanging?

Throughout history, it was commonplace to go watch public executions and people came out in droves. People haven't changed just because governments decided to stop the practice.

I would imagine there would be a lucrative market if a country were to decide to take advantage of it and charge people to view executions over the web. (very surprised this has not happened yet)

Hell, bring back the fighting pits and arenas, and let the murderers and rapists duke it out there. May not be the most "civilized" solution, but sure as hell beats spending countless dollars on their worthless asses keeping them imprisoned.

Depends on who's swinging. Like if it's some celebrity I hate, like Carrot Top or Kenny G or Yanni or something, sure I'd go.

How do you know he wasn't?

While the last legal hanging in LA was in 1941, I believe the last PUBLIC hanging was in the 1850s. Additionally, the state executes its prisoners at Angola, not in Covington--though that may have been different in the past. Still, unless the poster's grandfather is REALLY old, he probably didn't attend a public hanging.

Gladiator criminals would be cool. As long as they weren't set free if they won.

For those of you that don't believe in the hangings. I have an alternative and I think it would save money and would wipe our hands clean of these problems Pack these people up in warm clothing. A little food and water. Put them on a plane and drop them with a parachute in another country not friendly with Americans. Eastern Siberia/Russia. Iraq. Afghanistan, North Korea for the people convicted of murder or child rapes. Wish them well on the way out and they are no longer allowed back in the US.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how the Brits colonized Australia!

If it was an awful crime, yes. But I'd probably regret it afterward.

I would put them on tv and make it mandatory viewing. I'd have "enforcers" who punished those who didn't watch.

Further, once a year I would make each state have a drawing where one teenage boy and one teenage girl were chosen at random to be sent to the capitol where they would join the boy and girl from each of the other states in a fight to the death until only one person remained.

I would also make this fight mandatory viewing.
