O's vs Yanks Game 4: 2-1 Game 5 Tomorrow 5

Philip Hughes 16-13 4.23 ERA
Vs
Joe Saunders 9-13 4.07 ERA (1-0 1.59 ERA with O's)
quote:

Johnson allowed five runs in the ninth inning in the Orioles' 7-2 loss in Game 1. Manager Buck Showalter insists he still has faith in his closer, who earned a save with a perfect inning in a 3-2 win in Game 2.

"Jimmy is a big hearted, talented guy, that believe me, we'd be at home watching without people like Jim Johnson," Showalter said. "He's a special guy. We're real proud of him, and you'll see him again tomorrow night, I hope."

Saunders has not pitched in the Bronx since going 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA in two starts in the 2009 AL championship series with the Angels. Jeter (9 for 18) and Rodriguez (7 for 16) have the highest career averages among Yankees regulars against him.

Hughes went 2-2 with a 4.76 ERA in four starts against Baltimore this year, with Mark Reynolds homering twice against him. Three other also Orioles went deep.

Hughes had a rough September (5.39 ERA) but pitched well in second half with ERA under 4 in July and August.

Rodriguez 1-12 with 7 strikeouts
Rodriguez isn't the only star Yankee faring poorly in the series, with Curtis Granderson 1 for 11 with six strikeouts and Robinson Cano 2 for 12. Ibanez and Russell Martin are the only Yankees to homer.

Reynolds dominated the Yankees this season with seven homers and 14 RBIs, but is 3 for 11 in this series. Adam Jones is 2 for 13 in the division series, while Matt Wieters is 1 for 13.

Baltimore starters have allowed 4 runs in 19 innings pitched
Yankees starters have allowed 7 runs in 24 innings pitched

Baltimore Bullpen 6 runs in 10 innings
Yankees Bullpen 0 runs allowed in 5 innings

Yankees bullpen will be tested tonight. Hughes will go 6, tops. Its hard to watch him pitch, he nibbles way too much and doesnt trust his stuff.

6 is fine considering the bullpen hasn't done much work this series all the arms are rested

I laughed when the reporter asked him to describe the emotions he was going through after that HR. My response was "none".

And I'll sum up that entire interview:

Don't do too much
Don't do too much
Don't do too much
Don't do too much
Don't do too much

What a great night of baseball............that I missed. Turned on the Yankees game RIGHT after the walk off, and didn't feel like staying up to watch Detroit/Oakland. Crazy ending.

When your 2-7 hitters go 2-26... well, you're not going to win very often. The O's offense is terrible and playing like it.

Oh well. House's money. Get 'em tonight.

Yanks 2-7 went 1-24 last night outside of Ibanez.

Good pitching has trumped bad hitting in this series

If you had to listen to him call every Yankee game (along with his bimbette sidekick Suzyn "Clueless" Waldman), you'd want to run over him with an 18-wheeler.

The only good thing about Rodriguez' slump is not having to hear Sterling's "It's an A-Bomb. From A-rod!"

:Thuh-uh-uh-uh Yankees win!:

O's don't score--their offense sucks.
Yanks don't score, it's the O's' pitching that's shutting them down.

I know petty consistency is the hobgoblin, etc., but c'mon man. Give C.C., Andy, Kuroda, and the NY bullpen a little credit.

Hughes show up tonight with his "A" stuff. Game 5 unnecessary.

You are probably right. I am also a big fan of Hawk Harrelson, if that says anything about my taste in broadcasters.

Harrelson tries a little too hard to channel Dizzy Dean. Had to listen to him call a Sox-Yanks game on MLB. Painful. At least, in Sterling's defense, he's not a hopeless homer.

The difference here is the Yankees scored a bunch of runs all year. And the Orioles didn't. I'm not saying the O's offense sucks because they can't score against NY. I'm saying it sucks because it can't score against anyone. All year. It's sucking worse now and part of that is that every starter in this series has brought their "A" game, from both sides.

But the Yankees scored 92 more runs the O's this season. that's not an accident. And the O's are short one of their best hitters in Markakis, and they are replacing him with the surviving husk of Jim Thome.

To be honest, I'd rather face CC than Petitte in an elimination game. If the O's can survive Game 4, I like the Tillman-CC matchup.

i can't think of a scenario where i'd want the opposite (injury/immediate family member dying aside)

Maybe, but here are Petitte's career postseason #'s compared to CC's

19-11, 3.83 ERA, 64/23 K/BB
8-4, 4.56 ERA, 89/47 K/BB

And Peittite's the one with an ERA below 3 this season. He's nails, he's great, and he has an incredible track record. I'd rather face CC (not saying that CC is some bum or anything, just that Petitte is a postseason monster).

Pettite's postseason stats, great as they are, can't hold a candle to Ron Guidry's. Yet I suspect Guidry would be your first choice to face the Birdies in an elimination game on Friday.

Silly? Maybe. But Andy, great as he was early in the season (and effective as he's been in most of his starts since returning from the DL), is still more subject to being rocked given his age and his long layoff this season. In a game where falling behind by 3 runs would be almost fatal, I think I'd rather have the younger horse out there, with Andy in reserve.

i agree with most of what you said, i just keep waiting for andy to get "old" this season. he has far exceeded my expectations, but in a winner take all game, i'd rather cc on the mound at this point in their careers.
