I wrote a research paper back in the day about the death penalty. Costs waaaaaay more in a death penalty case than it does life in prison. Automatic appeals process. Court costs. Plus you still have to house an feed them until execution, which in many cases is well over a decade until the actual execution date. I forget all of the specifics but I looked at average time on death row and average costs to keep someone locked, average time people lived with life sentences. Millions spent on a death case.
