If someone did something to me, or a family member, personally, than I would probably retaliate.
So instead, if someone did something to your family, you would risk the rest of your life in prison instead of going about it legally and letting someone else hang him for you?

For a number of reasons, not the least of them being that I oppose the death penalty on the grounds that I believe that the State should NEVER kill its citizens.
