I'm talking about what constitutes a great athlete. You obviously still haven't picked up on what I'm saying.

The point you are missing is that most competitive cyclists are great at more than cycling. Endurance athletes regularly compete in other endurance sports because the training is common. The biggest difference between training as a cyclist and training for the Ironman is the proportional amount of time spent on each facet of the race.

Based on the confessions of guys like Jonathan Vaughters, Johan Museeuw and Tyler Hamilton and the all the behind-the scene stuff they revealing, I'm beginning to think that it's very likely that every single rider in the peleton was doping. Vaughters was just an ordinary domestique. If guys like him have to dope just to struggle to make a team, who's not doping?

No doubt. It was clearly institutionalized on all the teams. Dope or get out of the way

He obviously fits the definition of an athlete, and he is obviously great or elite at the definition of an athlete.

He is an athlete, he participates in athletics. He is great or elite at the sport he participates in. But what I'm saying is the same as saying that someone is a great pitcher, but not a great athlete.

You're pretty much the only one who doesn't think a cyclist is an athlete.

Considering I've never said that, I'm not sure how you could conclude that I don't think a cyclist is an athlete at all.

ETA: Considering that an athlete is someone that participates in sports.

Ok. That's reasonable, I don't know enough about the training and cross competition of each individual racer. They may all be great athletes, I'm just saying that basing it off of one sport doesn't justify the term 'great athlete' to me.

This is no different than the pitcher analogy that I made. Usain Bolt is a great sprinter, possibly the greatest ever.

Whether he did it or not, I am still going to support his efforts in finding a cure for cancer. People make mistakes, not saying he should get a nobel peace prize or man of the year, but he had done a lot and I will continue to support him.

Ok so what you're saying is that one cannot be a great athlete unless he/she does it in two or more disciplines?

Everyone offering a differing opinion and evidence of sports and athleticism against your argument is playing too nice. And yes, I "get" your argument.

You, sir, are an idiot.

Nothing new really. Who cares. Armstrong has done so much for health, charity, cancer patients, etc...who cares about this!

I care. The "doping culture" & cycling have co-existed (unfortunately) forever. LA was tested and tested and tested and except for a dinged corticosteroid in 1999, as far as I am aware, he never failed a drug test. If he had (unless God forbid, the UCI covered it up), then he has passed the standards that were set when he won his titles. Doping was institutionalized within the sport. It's just the reality, not making excuses. I prefer to remember how excited everyone (myself included) was when he successfully came back from cancer and raced. I'm more concerned that cycling NOW stays clean and moves past it's dark era, but staying vigilant to prevent history from repeating itself. Pipe dreams perhaps, but I love the sport.

On the bright side however, the future of US cycling looks promising. TJ continues to improve and may move into the ranks of TDF champions and Taylor Phinney should become a 'classics' force. Both are very young with tons of potential.
