Hugo, do you mean racist or prejudiced? rac·ist [rey-sist] Show IPA noun 1. a person who believes in racism, the doctrine that a certain human race is superior to any or all others. prej·u·dice [prej-uh-dis] Show IPA noun, verb, prej·u·diced, prej·u·dic·ing. noun 1. an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. 2. any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable. 3. unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group. I ask because the usage of racist has butchered the meaning the of the word. Not being a smartass, just I see people that do not like different people based on race and/or other difference. However, it has nothing to do with a feeling of racial superiority. They just don't like certain groups.

You're playing into the stereotype. Louisiana is probably as least racist a state as they come. We are whites and blacks living side by side. You want to see racism go to the northeast, visit NY and NJ....
Yep. Check out Boston and get back to me.

I mean:
quote:
rac·ism [rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA noun 1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

I'd say on both sides. I can only speak for myself and my surrounding peer groups but will say its not nearly the issue as generations past.

I think very, very few white people hate black people because of their race, I think very many white people seek to avoid interaction with black people. Some may consider the latter racist. Tolerance? What is there to tolerate? Civil functional behavior is civil functional behavior I don't think there is a different standard applied based upon race. Intolerable behavior is the same regardless of the race of the abuser. People do form stereotypes, and some suffer because of group behavior, not sure how that is racist, it is unfortunate for the good people in the group of miscreants.

Depends where you are. I worked in downtown BR and professional blacks and whites got along swimmingly. I never saw a single instance of racism in that setting. Drive 10 minutes to SU and youll find all kinds of racism. Ditto if you drive 20 minutes to Dinky Springs and youve got segregated prom. Its a weird state.

In the past, whites would tolerate as they held some common bond with even the most backwards white trash.. Race mattered more regardless of the social standing of a black person. That seems to be fading in today's society as people are more concerned with surrounding themselves with people of equal standing and race isnt the mitigating factor it once was.

Everyone holds stereotypes in their mind about men, women, all races...ie: white men can't jump, black people have more colorful names, women are more emotional and irrational, etc. Bigots base their beliefs on personal experiences and beliefs gained during their lifetimes. Racists have an in-bred, often generational, deep hatred, more often the less educated, less- wordly, lower on the social ladder folks. Racists really believe they are held down because of another race...that it is the other "races" fault and racism is generational. With me, I have friend of different races, but know folks black, white, etc who I don't care much for too.

Also, I have lived in numerous States for extended periods. Many folks in the North assume racism is worse in the South. I find levels of cooperation, tolerance, bigotry and racism to be similar everywhere.

When was this? I don't really recall an era when "backwards white trash" had a significant bond with more functional whites. It is like the relationship of White progressives with their Black political allies?
