AV Club's top 50 films of 90s

LINK

Link is to the top ten. Links to the rest of the list are within that.

I don't have too much of an opinion on the list, but I figured some people here would be interested in it. At least maybe give you guys something to bitch about.

Schindler's List is too low at 18.

re: AV Club's top 50 films of 90s

I'm actually shocked at how conservative the AV Club's list is. They tend to throw some curveballs. Like, why no Festen? It's certainly not my favorite movie on earth, but it might be the most important film of the 90s (Dogme 95 and the "cinematic vow of chastity"). It seems like the kind of film that would worm its way on to the list (or Julien Donkey Boy).

And, really, no truly off-the-wall choices. I'm surprised they didn't do something antagonistic like put Jurassic Park in the top ten just to see film geeks' heads explode.

Solid list, but not much of a conversation starter. I, too, think Tarantino made a stunning debut in the 90s and GoodFellas is awesome.

It's hard to believe that movies liek Dazed & Confused, Toy Story 2, Rushmore, and Out of Sight (never even heard of this movie) would beat out Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Shawshank, Apollo 13 and the like.

I bet Jason Schwartzman's stare just pierces your soul with that picture.

i would have gone with casino over goodfellas (neither would be #1). that's purely my opinion, though. casino is my favorite gangster flick of the 90s not named Jane Austen's Mafia

You've never heard of Out of Sight? Wow, I'm old. It's pretty great. It was a huge deal when it came out.

Pulp Fiction is SO overrated. Yeah...it's a good movie, but come-the-freak-on! I would have ranked Apollo 13, Schindler's List, and (yes) Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction. I like Quentin Tarantino but he's not as good as a lot of people think he is.

Based off an Elmore Leonard novel. You should check it out. I like it even though I think it's a little high on the list.

Fun list - reminds me of some greats that I havent thought about in a while.

I loved those Whit Stilman films back in the day. The Cohen bros were just masterpiece after masterpiece. Zhang Yimou at his absolute best with Raise the Red Lantern. Great docs like Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, Crumb, American Movie.

Glengarry Glen Ross would be top 3 for me.

Great decade for movies.

Apollo 13 over Pulp Fiction? C'mon dude. If we're talking movies of the 90's that are overrated Apollo 13 is near the top of that's how everybody feels about it.

20-30 years from now you're not going to hear debates whether or not Apollo 13 was the best movie of the past 40-50 years. You will probably hear Pulp Fiction in that debate. It's not my #1 of the 90's, but it's up there. Pulp Fiction was a very original idea (cue the "inception was ripped of a daffy duck script" guys), Apollo 13 was kind of gift wrapped for anybody who wanted it.

As far as Tarantino, there aren't many guys in history who started a career as strong as he did/has. Ron Howard? Eh, not so much.

Oh, hyperbole, thy name is internet. While I don't think Howard is a legendary great or anything, he's certainly a solid Hollywood pro. Only 2 good movies? Which of these aren't "good"?

Frost/Nixon
Cinderella Man
A Beautiful Mind
Ed TV
Ransom
Apollo 13
The Paper
Far and Away
Backdraft
Parenthood
Willow
Gung Ho
Cocoon
Splash
Night Shift

That's a pretty solid career. Not a whole lot of home runs (though I love the Paper), but a lot of singles. He makes quality entertainments.

Top 10 is solid except for TWO glaring omissions.

You seriously need to take out...OUT OF SIGHT and TOY STORY 2 and put in...

FARGO and BOOGIE NIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 2 I was thinking of were Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man. First/Nixon and Apollo were good too, but everything else was really meh (haven't seem the Paper or Willow)

Yes, my post was a bit exaggerated, but I don't think he's that great of a director.
