This thread got me thinking... It should be noted that Oct 29 is the 30 year anniversary of "The Nightfly", Fagen's superb first solo album.

Am I the only one who prefers to listen to Steely Dan off an actual album? My wife treated (physical therapy) Walter Becker. He shared a lot of cool stories with her. She said he would just ramble on about a lot of different stuff mainly about family. I know it sounds like a CSB, but they were some cool stories.

I did not discover that I loved this band until WAY after they were current. For that reason, I never bothered to get albums. I probably have them on my hard drive(Pretty sure I have Aja and Katy Lied), but I tend to just hit play all on my mp3 player which just has their better known songs.

It just reminds me of being younger and dad playing them on the record player. the cracks, hiss, bumps, etc. So when I hear their songs now or on the radio, I think of the missing scratches. I'm that way with the Doobie Brothers too.

yeah, I remember my cousin playing this on his turntable... I wasn't a huge fan, although some songs were irresistible then (Dirty Work)... ELO is another band I'd put in this category...

Does not get the love it deserves. I did not know until recently, but for a while, Michael McDonald was basically a member of the band. Can't miss his background work on a few songs.

My college roommates and I wore out Can't Buy a Thrill, Kay Lied, Pretzel Logic, and the Royal Scam. If that vinyl is still in use it must sound like Jiffy Pop.

I hear a lot of they "were" a great band, and "had" a lot of good stuff. They are still around, recording and touring. The most recent album is a solo by Fagen, "Sunken Condos". Sounds good and classic. Great Interview with Donald Fagen here,, and link to streaming the new album here. To be released on October 16th. New Single: I'm Not the Same Without You

Exactly...Black Cow/Deacon Blues/Aja--side 1 on vinyl--is one of my top 5 album sides of all-time (side 2 of Beatles--Abbey Road is #1). Relaxing is the perfect description...i usually listen to it on the way home from work--it's the perfect length for my commute.

Deacon Blues is a favorite (the Aja album is a masterpiece). Does anyone know the meaning behind the lyrics for the chorus, especially pertaining to the lyrics in bold: I'll learn to work the saxophone I'll play just what I feel Drink Scotch whisky all night long And die behind the wheel They got a name for the winners in the world I want a name when I lose They call Alabama the Crimson Tide Call me Deacon Blues What's with the Bama reference? I've been singing along to that song most of my life and have no idea.....(I suck at interpreting lyrics).

The song, while contrasting winning and losing in life, does so by taking as an image the contrast between the perennial powerhouse, Crimson Tide football team, and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. In the five years before the song was written, the Crimson Tide had lost only 8 games total, while Wake Forest had a losing record every season. Group member Donald Fagen said, "Walter (Becker) and I had been working on that song at a house in Malibu. I played him that line, and he said, 'You mean it's like, they call these cracker a-holes this grandiose name like the Crimson Tide, and I'm this loser, so they call me this other grandiose name, Deacon Blues?' And I said, 'Yeah!' He said, 'Cool! Let's finish it!'" Deacon Blues

Steely Dan is easily one of my favorite bands of all time. I really got into them in college its great to hear that college guys are still listening to them. Katy Lied, The Royal Scam and Aja are my favorite albums but all are good. So many great songs some that don't get talked about as much: Kings, Dr Wu, Haitian Divorce, Babylon Sisters. And Fagen's first Solo album The nightfly is also awesome. LINK
