The 'great solos' thread got me on them. This was a great, great, great band (well, pair of virtuosos). They also produced ALOT of great shaggin' music.

Songs... I like the Dan... Definitely came to them a little later in life... late 20's or so... I had no time for this when I was younger, even though my cousin played them a good bit...

Becker and Fagen are geniuses for sure, but it helped that they hired the best studio musicians. All the famous guitar solos and many other memorable instrumental moments are due to other musicians. I don't know how much was improvised on the spot vs. composed, and how exactly Becker and Fagen determined the overall sound; I'd really love to see a "making of" video for their albums.

There is a 'making of' Aja, I believe, and if I'm not mistaken, Can't Buy a Thrill. You see how meticulous they are, and how they orchestrate everything. Absolutely everything. The musicians are VERY important, but they provide little, simply their talent. Fagen does most, with Becker acquiescing or discreping.

Aja is one of my all time favorite songs of any kind.

They had many a beautiful song. If you didn't have Steely Dan at your place in college, you were gay. Plain and simple, necessary. Also, great for some Sundays.

I had a friend who absolutely didn't believe they were white. I'm pretty sure his comment to me was "Nope, those guys can't be white, white people don't make that kind of music." I'm pretty sure it was a compliment.

Definitely. It was the epitome of smooth, and it was a 'full' sound. You're referring to Aja. If Black Cow didn't work it's magic, then, well, um, hang it up. I also was partial to the use of Babylon Sisters from Gaucho (in spite of Hey Nineteen and it's mesmerization and being a great song, this was a cooler song IMO).

Peg is my personal fav but I haven't listened to them in a little while. I went on a bit of Steely Dan bender a few years ago. I'm probably the only 23 year old who listens to them

I seriously don't think Walter Becker had every note of the Kid Charlemagne solo planned out in advance, for example. W.B. is a guitarist himself, so if this was the case, it seems like they wouldn't need any other musicians. Let's not forget the presence of Michael McDonald as well - a song like Rose Darling wouldn't be the same without him.

All hired guns that you hear. Becker plays rhythm and solos intermittently, but rarely (if ever), when it comes to something classifiable as 'watershed'.

Right, they are hired guns. But those hired guns play a big part in my enjoyment of the songs, y'know?

What I meant to say is, these two are the orchestrators, and Fagen more than Becker. Much more. Their knowledge of music, specifically blues and especially soul, is astounding, and in spite of being great musicians themselves, prefer to orchestrate 'magisterum'.

Just popped in to say "I LOVE THE DAN!" Aja is a masterpiece. I could also sing you every line off the Cant Buy A Thrill album (not that anyone would want me to)
