| Texas Rangers will let Josh Hamilton hit the open market before making an offer (Posted on 10/9/12 at 3:27 pm)
quote:
The Texas Rangers will not be making any offers to Josh Hamilton before he hits the open market in free agency. Clubs have a chance to negotiate with their own prospective free agents, but Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said the team agreed with Hamilton's representatives that the slugger would test the market, so they'll wait to see how it shakes out. "If you've gone this far, you're going to test the market," Daniels said. "The realities are when a guy goes out and tests the market and it's this close, you're not going to pre-empt it. I think he's going to go out and test the market and see what's out there and get back to us. "No door has been closed. We're also very realistic about when a star player hits free agency at this point and the history of them returning to their original club. So we have to prepare both ways and prepare the club for the possibility that he's not back.
LINK Sounds like the Rangers are ready to move on. It'll be fascinating to see the type of interest he'll get in the open market.

They won't match the best offers that come in. Hamilton will just have to REALLY want to stay.

I think they will keep for a reasonable price. But there will be a ton clauses in any contract the club signs with him.

If I were a Rangers fan, I'd be concerned about my aging/injured core of bats. Losing Hamilton will suck, even if he tanked at the end of the year and the farm system is deep.

I live in Dallas and listen to local espn guys that spend 3 hours a day complaining about all things Dallas. But one thing they and everyone is for sure about is that they won't pursue Hamilton. They say that they have heard talk that the going price will be around 7 years 150-175 million.

Where would he go? By all indication, The Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers should not be interested. I say hello NL West. Padres or Giants.

Dallas is a big small town as far as everybody knowing where everybody goes when they are supposedly off the radar. I couldn't imagine trying to get control of Hamilton if he went off the rails in NYC, LA or another market like that. Good freakin' luck.

I kind've think that's the thought of letting Hamilton walk. time to remake the team. Elvis and Moreland are the only returning starters under 30 (though Kinsler, Napoli, and Murphy are all 30 on the nose). Bring up Profar and Olt. Let Hamilton and Napoli walk. Move Young to the bench. That means you're only truly "old" starter is Beltre, who just had a MVP level season.

There has been some talk about the Marlins pursuing him... but we all saw how the big off-season worked for them last year

Napoli has been great when he's been healthy. He's worth keeping around if only for the damage he does within the division. He is the Angels' worst nightmare.

Miami would not be good for him. If Ron Washington followed him to South Beach, it would be Scarface II, just imagine the blow that would be consumed.

tell me about it, troubl! i was thinking this exact thing. what a talent, but what a fragile situation to handle as a baseball club dealing with his drama.

It is not really surprising. I'd think Boston is his landing spot but who knows. 2013 might as well be a transition year and start Olt, Profar etc. Break in Perez as a SP too.
