I wear the hell out of a black suit. You just need to add some color.

I have a brown suit for weddings/happy occasions and a charcoal suit for funerals. Both Banana Republic, and they are both pretty nice suits for what I paid for them (under $300 each). How often do you wear suits? I only wear my suits 2-3 times/year (total, not each), so I didn't spend a bunch of money on mine.

Charcoal or navy. Leave black suits to the caterers. Hickey Freeman is great if you can shell out the bucks. If you are poor, go get a Jos A Bank Signature or Signature gold suit when it goes on sale.

For a wear once in a while, grownish looking suit, that you can also wear out on a date night and have some drinks w/o freaking out about ruining a grand and a half, hit up the Jos. A. Bank in the Pinnacle Shops. Go to their website and get on the email list, they're always sending me shite on deep discounts or 2 for 1 deals. They're not ultra high quality, but they get the job done. I have a dark charcoal one with a small pinstripe that I get lots of compliments when I wear it out. A good crisp shirt and a conservative tie will play well. Also save $ on the suit to buy really nice shoes. I've gone down to a tailor gotten measured, then went online to bluefly, zappos, overstock and even Amazon to bargain shop suits and sport coats. You have to dig, but there are some gems to be found dirt cheap on those sites. It's worth it if you're not going to be wearing it that often.

This, don't let anyone tell you pinstripes if it is going to be your only suit. that makes it easy to spot that you always wear the same one.

Yeah, it is. Some say grey but I disagree. Navy is just cheap as shite. Pin Stripes arent alway appropriate. A tailored black suit and BLACK shoes are a must for a first suit unless you're 18.

IMO if you dont have any suits right now, you need to find one of those buy 1 get 1 free or some shite like that deals. You dont want to be that guy who wears the same damn thing at every event. With that said, I think a starter collection should be Navy, Charcoal, and one warm weather (like khaki poplin or something).

My go-to is a dark grey Baroni. Flat front, cuffed pants and a dual vent jacket.

Agree, but every man should have a dark blue suit. I don't wear suits a lot, so I only have 4 - navy, black, brown and dark green. If I had to pick one, I'd choose the black. Sure, I wore it to my friend's father's funeral, but I also wore it as best man at his wedding. Also, it's more of a traditional looking suit, so I won't look like an idiot if I wear it 20 years from now. The green one holds most of the fun memories, though.

no it's not for just one suit get a really dark navy. a black suit at a semi-dressy events that he'll more than likely be going to looks to formal. a dark blue will still pass at a funeral or a power broker meeting and more casual stuff.

Either dark blue or dark gray so that it really doesn't stand out like a bold pinstripe or glen plaid would. No one will ever know you only have one suit (if you only wear it occasionally) if it is solid. Dress it up and change the look by drastically different ties and shirts (color, cuffs & collars)so you have different "looks"
