Why no tazer or baton? The kid was 5'7" 135lbs. Cop will probably lose his job and the kid's family fidna get paid.

"He [Collar] had grabbed her [one of the victims] arm and was trying to bite her on the arm and making weird noises and statements towards this victim," Cochran said. Just minutes later, surveillance cameras caught Collar, drenched in sweat, trying unsuccessfully to get into the USA Police Department. Less than a minute later, deputies say he began "very actively beating this window glass," in an apparent attempt to break through it. Shortly after that, USA police officer Trevis Austin, 27, came out of the station with his gun drawn, a move which Cochran said made sense in the situation. Surveillance footage showed Collar repeatedly lunging at the ground and the officer while alternating through fighting stances as Austin attempted to retreat, according to Cochran. Although the surveillance footage and witness statements given to sheriff's deputies may point toward a lawful use of force on Austin's behalf, Cochran stressed that the investigation is ongoing. "We have not reached any conclusions," Cochran said. "We will ultimately present this information to the district attorney, and the district attorney of course will take further actions with, I guess, the grand jury. It's her call." Collar was shot and killed by Austin around 1:23 a.m. Saturday. The District Attorney's Office is investigating the case with MCSO. Collar's family has also announced they have retained legal counsel to conduct an independent investigation.

If someone on LSD attacked any other person it would be an acceptable outcome. Batons and tasers arent the cure all and many officers arent equipped with tasers anyway.

In all seriousness, I think the kid's family will get paid a ton because I haven't read the kid brandished any sort of weapon or even touched the officer. Should have at least popped a few into the kid's lower body if he was going to shoot. He was only a few feet away, after all. JMO and I understand people will disagree.

Not saying it was or wasnt justified, i just have an honest question. So any time someone squares up trying to fight another person, they have the right to use deadly force?

Cops at USA aren't issued tazers and this cop didn't have his mace on him, although it wouldn't have worked anyway most likely.
If you read the article, the cop drew his weapon prior to going outside. Cops are trained not to let suspects get into close combat when they have their weapons drawn as they could wrestle them out and use them and there was no time for him to holster the weapon (according to the article).
Sucks but moral of the story: don't do drugs, kids.
The DA might pursue murder charges on the individuals who supplied the LSD.
This should answer a few of the questions about "use of deadly force" here.

the kid's family has hired a prominent criminal detective to "investigate" the facts surrounding the shooting. They're going to sue, obviously.

Whenever an officer arrives on scene there is at least a pistol present. If the officer gets into a fight and is knocked unconscious the subject can take his weapon and kill him or others. It appears that the use of force was justified from reading this article but the information is limited.

This is what the good cops do on TV, not in real life. If a cop finds a need to fire at a stationary target, it's multiple shots center mass. Target neutralized.
