What are you looking for besides something different? If you want the opposite of the south, head out west. Big city? Smaller, upscale city? Suburbia? Weather preferences? Things you like to do? Outdoors?

chattanooga is awesome. Haven't been since I was 10 but had a blast.
Chattanooga is not awesome, but it's better than BR in some ways. Miss food and tiger football a lot being up here. Austin, TX would be interesting. Colorado would be fricking fantastic. A lot of places out west would be great for that matter. Army corps of Engineers has really stepped up hiring for hydro generation out west. I have been considering a move out of nuclear for a chance to move out west, but I just wouldn't get near the pay I am getting now. Being closer to retirement I rather wait it out and get paid, go west with no job and plans to relax and enjoy retirement.

Granted, I haven't lived there for 11 years but I have a hard time believing that. OTOH, maybe the Marcellus is bringing in a lot of new opportunities.

you do realize nyc events are the best of the best, they don't want some busted Baton Rouge ghetto event planner.

Well its true. If I were the OP I'd be looking at the following: - Nashville - Charlotte - Pittsburgh - Omaha - Northern VA - Boise

Why?
Obnoxious, pretentious, rude people. Obnoxious, rude, in your face Jewish population. Lots of transient type dead beats everywhere. The place is infested with people from the northeast, that apparently have to act more obnoxious down there than they did back up north, in order to prove they're from NY,NJ, etc. Too many BS rules. OK place to have a vacation home, but that's about it. Imo, lived there for 10 years, still have rental property there.

biggest questions are what yall are looking for when you move? night life? good food? near an attraction? near beach/mountains/woods/countryside/big city/etc.? do yall want to live in an apartment or house? can you handle extreme cold? more info on your interests will be a major driving point for help rather than every dip shite saying why their city is obviously better than BR.

And Hoboken also has lots of young hot women, I love sitting at the bar by the PATH station around 5:30 when they are all heading back to town from work, my wife doesn't like that so much. I can't help you on the job front but your wife could most probably easily get into the cobvention planning field if the wedding thing doesn't work out. My wife is in sales for the convention biz (her company negotiates hotel pricing for the large convetions) and makes bank. Be prepared for sticker shock if you head up here, rents are high, but still cheaper than NYC. Drink prices are way higher than what I was used to in New Orleans and BR. My friend went to see Book of Mormon the other night and a double was $30, yes you read that right, $30.00. Oh, and my wife has tons of hotel connections so she may be able to at least get your SO's foot in the door

Washington DC I moved here from south LA about 2.5 years ago and I LOVE it. I think one of the greastest things is that you don't feel lost in a culture here. When you're in NYC, you're surrounded by New Yorkers. In DC almsot everyone is from somewhere else. The young professional scene is great. FWIW I am not in the politics scene and I generally avoid that whole thing. You don't have to be a political yuppie to fit in and love this city. You want authentic anything here in terms of food? Name a country and you'll find quality authentic eats from all over the world. 2 hours to the mountains, 2 hours to the beach. Summers are hot, but not Louisiana hot. It may snow a few times in the winter but it doesn't take a whole lot to shut down business should we get a good snowfall.

She doesn't work for herself as a coordinator. She works at a nice wedding place. She does have her own business as well though.

not really. Its good advice regardless. You dont indicate having any jobs lined up, and your median incomes put you in the 100-120K range. The cities you listed have a steep cost of living. But go for it. I wish you all the best.

Meh, I hear you. There are a-holes everywhere though. Been here for 11 years and love it. I've lived all over the country and this is my favorite place I've lived outside of Colorado Springs. Snow gets old.

Don't care about size. Weather like it is outside right now but not a determining factor.
