The nursing home business is disgusting. They keep people alive who have no business being alive just to milk every penny they can.
When my grandmother was in there we noticed she wasn't eating and was losing weight dramatically. Took her to a doctor and they figured out that the home had let her teeth decay badly, it hurt her so much to chew that she had basically stopped eating. Supposedly they had an in-home dentist too.

I can't believe I was the first say it. Don't worry Obama care death squads will off you long before you reach this state.

You obviously feel quite strongly about this. I do too. I don't ever want to be a burden to anyone. I will end my own life if I can, but if I can't I hope someone would help me. I fail to see how me wanting to not be a burden is selfish. I'm not making a a decision for anyone else. I am stating my desire for a quick, clean death rather than a prolonged life. You are entitled to your own opinions on the matter. If you want to live to the limits of medical technology, that is your choice. It's not mine.

I think his post was based on compassion for his grandfather. I love my mom and hate to see her going through this. Not for my sake, but for her's. if i had choice, i would never choose to be her in condition. That doesn't mean i don't have compassion for her, it simply means that getting old and being sick sucks. there ain't nothing gold about the golden years except your urine.

Good point...and the son needs to be supportive of how Dad decides to handle it. Time to pay Dad back for all the support he got growing up.

Yep. People back in WWII rarely lived past 65, now people usually live to their late 70s or early 80s. Life expectancy has increased at a consistent rate, to where we will likely live to be in our nineties if not hundred. Current predictions is that the first bicentaurian is alive right now and was born in the late 60s to mid 70s.

Just because you too had a sick parent or close relative that you had to care for through death doesn't give you free reign to act like a petulant child here. Whether you agree with it or not, Motown's thought is coming from a place of compassion for his family and he has a good point that is worth discussing. How about you act like an adult and display a little self control?

Instead of cherishing the last moments of life .....your grandfathers life and its impact on your dads life. You come up with the bright idea of exiting at some point in time. All the while giving no thought to what that exit may do to your own family. I would ask how old you are but really age is no excuse for your poor train of thought.

I'm right there with you. Once my mind goes and/or I'm completly dependent on others, I want to be gone. I'm sure there are many nursing homes that are great and have good intentions, but I don't want any of them getting my money.

the hardest part was walking into the alzheimer's unit day room and seeing mom in a wheel chair, holding a baby doll in each arm, chin on her chest, asleep. it gave me a stomach ache. When her mom was 85, she was in the hospital where mom was a nurse. Mom marked mamaw's file "dnr" and "no code," not because she didn't want the burden, but because she did not want her mother to suffer through a code blue. that's compassion, imho.

what's that?
Code blue is when a patient is dead on the table and needs to be resucitated (turning blue). Bringing someone back is often a violent and painful process. Broken ribs, burns, etc are often side effects of the process. It can be incredibly painful to be brought back to life.

I agree. If I'm dying, put a gun in my hands. I don't want to burden my family with my care, my bills and my needs. My life is over and I don't want them going out of their way and making sacrifices in their life that could hurt them in the long run to worry about me when I'm just going to die anyway.

Have it all in writing so that your intentions are clear. When it comes to that end stage, everyone gets nervous about "helping things along." If your family knows your true desires, it would actually make them feel worse about "dragging it out." Now, don't overreact people. We aren't just talking about people getting a little old. We are talking about a terminal, non functional state. Hospice and morphine.
