| Workout thread: Why do so many people use such bad form? (Posted on 10/8/12 at 2:46 pm)
is it so they can throw up more weight and look impressive to the strangers around them? it doesn't help development and risks injry I even see personal trainers teaching people to use bad form all over the place. its really getting bad out there. if people would just concentrate on form and use weight they can actually control they would get such better results. end/rant!

Because squatting 1/4 depth with 275 looks more impressive (they think) than squatting all the way to the floor with 175. The worst is when one of these nimrods tries to give advice.

I've thought about approaching a few guys in my gym who are going to wreck their backs doing squats. These guys are going pretty low, but their back hunches over during the movement repeatedly. I decided not to say anything though because I hate people. All people

All newbs sacrifice form for more weight.. and they always will. It's okay to cheat slightly at the end of a set but not for the whole time.

Most people are more concerned with looking like they are bad arses than actually being bad arses. Don't try to help them either or they will blow up on you.

I'm not saying I'm a workout expert but I've been in teh game long enough to know basic form on all major movements. When I see a guy with chicken legs walk in grab 45lb dumbells and commence to swinging them like kettle bells while doing what he thinks are "curls" it makes me chuckle and ...cry a little

I see this shite all the time on bench. Worked out at lunch today. Guy on bench next to me was doing sets with 225 coming down a quarter of the way with his whole body jerking like a fish out of water. I thought for sure he was going to drop it on his chest.

Simple insecurities. People (especially men) are afraid to be judged as weak or inferior. If there is more weight they are lifting or pulling, it makes them feel more like a man, but those people aren't in the gym for actualy physical results. maybe they are their for the social aspect, or an emotional jump, but they aren't there for the best physical gains.

I don't know if it would even make a difference if they lnew how to properly do a curl, or a lat pull or use the damn hammer machines. If MOST people do it one way, thats how people want to do it. It's accepted. I have a friend who lives in another city who is a personal trainer (along with nutritionist, and alot of other things) and he only accepts female clients with out a referral because of this. He says men just don't want to listen and that the women, by in large, are much more receptive to proper form training because they don't have the ego in the gym and fear that they are being judged by how much weight they stack or grab.

I guess you are right 44. when I was in my 20s I lifted heavy but I built up to it over time. I had somem good mentors in teh weight room that stressed form. I don't lift as heavy now (I would say moderate)mainly due to a concern of injury and impact on my golf so I concentrate on perfect form and my results are just as good

I like to feel a good calf burn after working barbell curls in the power rack.

Me either - as we age, there is no reason to. Unless that's your scene (bodybuilding or competitive lifting), men can get in and stay in better shape by various activities and a well rounded fitness approach that requires no heavy lifting.

Saw a guy doing EZ-Bar vertical rows at roughly the same time I was. He was doing 10 pounds heavier and going for more reps (probably fewer sets, I'm doing 5x5), but he was getting a damn good calf workout the whole time. Lunging up on his tip-toes to gain momentum as he pulled the weight up.

never understood why people would throw so much stress on your knees.... To reference the OP: I think it's because they honestly dont know any better. If people ask, I will help them...and notice that when you start explaining the "why" of good form, people in the immediate vicinity tend to stop and listen in.

Post your stats on the big 3 plz.. I am not sayin you are one of these people, but i see a lot of scrawny arse punks who have been working out for a while criticize people who are twice their size because of their " poor form". Most the time its the skinny fat fricks who are jealous...
