In the software industry it doesn't matter if you have a college degree. If you can code, you get paid. I was at lunch with the owner of my company and my manager. All of us are well paid guys and we never completed our degrees.

GM needed a bailout for a reason. Not many industries could you make at least 35 bucks an hour to be a janitor or turn screws on an assembly line. When I worked there for a summer job in 2006, I made enough money to support myself in college for over a year

A good welder in the business can pull close to 100K with OT. The pay rate is between 25-35 per hour.

It is very easy for a smart, hard-working individual without a degree to advance in the hotel industry. I have met many general managers of nice properties that did not have a college degree.

Welders learn a trade. Not in the same category as signing up for an oil field job IMO

This. We send too many kids to college when they're not college material, but would flourish at a vo-tech school learning a trade.

Welders are oilfield workers, they just work in a specialized portion of it. It is a nice thing to get 100 hours of pay for what can be at times 24 hours of work in fact. Sometimes you just stand around waiting to do your job. Plant welders will try to make as much money as they can between the end of hunting season til the beginning of the next in the fall so they can go hunting.

For a pipeline welder with his own truck make that $65-75/hr.

Many blue collar workers can make more money here than many college grads. Oil Mining Construction Logging Fishing. Hell, the girls that do the flagging on the road construction projects make $30-$40 an hour.

I have a nephew who has made a ton of money in farming. He can't read or write but he starting working when he dropped out of school at 15 (he was in 4th grade). He could drive a tractor at 8. He worked for larger farmers and took his pay partially in land. He works an average of 16 hours a day. His older brother handles his reading/writing/math issues. His dad keeps up with his accounting. He makes about 200K a year and he has the IQ of an adult bagging your groceries at Krogers.

Problem with jobs like this is you have to start at the bottom and work a lot of low paying jobs along the way to work your way up the ladder. Not many people have that kind of determination or love for their jobs. Friend of mine has been the front office mgr (front desk) at a local hotel for 25 years and has made enough to purchase three condos in Hawaii and one in Mexico. He does well for himself but it took a work up the ladder" mentality. He has a degree in education, but it's worthless and not necessary for his present job.

Yeah, I know a commercial fisherman and his wife (both have boats) who clear over 200k a year. Neither graduated HS.

Someone lied to you bro. A flagger is usually classed as a laborer. Laborers make $12-20. Most of them are on the lower end of that scale.
