No, I actually grill all the time. I have a large pool (9 feet deep, 35k gallons) with a lot of trees in my 1.5-acre yard. Just too much maintenance and regular trips to the pool supply store...I have many better things to do with my very limited "spare time." I enjoyed hosting parties for the kids over the years, but those days are over and my wife and I spend very little time in the pool these days.

Yeah a good rule of thumb is to put a 1b of stablizer/conditioner/cynauric acid/ for every bag of salt. Yeah people always come in and say the salesman told me I didn't have I put anything in it but salt and they get mad at us like we are lying.

We've had a pool for 3 summers and it's great. We use it every day during the swim season and have had tons of parties at our place. It does take a few minutes here and there to maintain it, but nothing major. Keep the chlorinator full, check your water levels once a week and scoop out a few leaves every now and then. No problem. My pool stays perfectly clear year round.
And for those talking about a salt water pool, you need to understand it's not actually salt water. It uses salt to generate chlorine. You still have a chlorinated pool, but you have to replace the salt just like I replace the chlorine.
I consider it one of the best big ticket items I've spent money on.

If you know what you're doing you will have to spend maybe 10 mins a day "working" on your pool plus maybe an extra 30 mins one day out of the week. That is nothing really (to me). It blows my mind the people that talk about how much hard work it is. It really isn't unless you let it go to shite and are always having to get it back to normal.

just sayin, all those tabs and shocking will shoot your CYA through the roof, and then you'll need much higher free chlorine levels to prevent algae...its a vicious cycle...this is why using bleach is much better for control (although admittedly far less convenient)
check your CYA, should be <80

Yeah it's hard to hold your cya levels if your using a stablized shock but if you cal hypo shocks the only cya your getting is through your tabs. So it's not to hard to manage

yeah, I actually dont have a pool but I have several friends that do. I am building one now (new house) and so have been reading about pool care for the last couple of years. That forum is fantastic. So many smart posters there.
My friends with pools are so clueless. They spend tons on maintenance, and complain constantly about what a pain in the arse it is. These pool guys are just working them over nonstop - who knows how many thousands on SWGs, cells, algaecides etc.
Why should they listen to me?

It's a huge racket. The few times I've had to go to the pool store for something I'll bring a sample of my pool water with me just for grins to see what they say. There is one specific location that will always tell me I need something and it's never cheap. One time on the same day I brought the same water to them and went to a different location of same company. One (the "bad one") told me I needed chemicals and the other one raved about how perfect my water was.
