| What is the board's general consensus on Tom Fitzmorris? (Posted on 10/8/12 at 7:52 am)
I thought about this while reading the New Orleans top 10 restaurants thread. I have always felt New Orleanians are divided on this one? What is your general opinion of him? Do you trust his recommendations or reviews? Do you follow his blog, radio show, etc?

Enjoy his show, but he seems stuck in the 1970's at times.

I question his objectivity. He's skated too close to accepting bribes for favorable reviews. He's a standing joke on most of the serious New Orleans food blogs.

His name makes me think of how disappointing the seafood muff is at Parran"s

That pretty much covers it. He's figured out how to make a good living with his schtick. That said, he is somewhat knowledgeable, and you can occasionally get some good info from him. Just don't take him too seriously.

I like him but I've listened to him for many, many years and I'm aware of taking part of it with a grain of salt. He's entertaining though and he loves his NO. I live by his "six month" rule and he taught me to put a stick of butter in my red beans at the end for creaminess. And he had a great food board for years prior to this one. Gris Gris and I were on it for a long time before this one even started.

I think he did a lot for the New Orleans food scene over the years and you have to respect that. First food publication, first radio show, and first website. He has some good recipes and great information on his website but you can't take everything he says seriously. Because he does take care of his advertisers

I used to love when he would let Andrea Apuzo(sp) come on and talk about all his specials and it would be obvious that Tom was patronizing him the whole time.

I enjoy watching him on the PBS shows like "Lost Restaurants of New Orleans."

The father of food critics in New Orleans was Richard Collin, who recently died. Fitzmorris couldn't carry Richard's jock strap. If you can find a copy of his book it's still a great read and spot on for many of the restaurants that are still around.

Here's a link to his obituary. I had the pleasure of taking several of his history courses at UNO back in the day. LINK

It really is a fantastic book. I articulated one of the big problems with Fitzmorris in the thread cited herein. He's often blinded by personal beefs (and personal loyalties).

I think the market is prime for a younger, hipper, nonbiased radio food personality to take over. How hard is it to get a block of radio time a few times a week? Every Nola blogger has "friends of the blog" who scratch each others backs. Only difference is Tom is heard by more people.

His website is an invaluable tool for searching for restaurants by cuisine and neighborhood. I thank him for that. Otherwise, I think there needs to be some younger blood. He's just too old school in terms of his likes and I think he's close to fraud levels on his taking money to promote places.

Completely agree. Would love for it to be hosted by 2 or 3. Someone in their late 20's- early 30's and someone in 50's-60's to represent the past/traditional food culture. I was kinda hoping that 690 AM would give it a try.

There's a guy who posts on here, who has a blog by the same name as his screenname, who you gotta figure is itching to be that guy. I think he'd probably do a pretty good job with it.

His picks are pretty good. I'd like to do his eat club but I haven't managed to fit one in to my schedule yet. He raves about Parrain's on Veterans a bit too much. Their food is ok.
