I'm beginning to train for the Houston marathon and getting ready to get some new shoes. My current shoes aren't completely done (350+ miles), but they likely will be soon.
I've read a few positive reviews about the Newtons, but I really don't get what makes them so different (and expensive). I'm running in Adidas Adizero Boston's now and they seem to work well. I'm also considering the Saucony Kinvara's as I'd like to get something with less heel to toe drop.
Thoughts on if Newton's are worth the price?

No .. I run in Brooks Glycerine 9. I'm stockpiling them as there is a new Glycerine 10 and I so love my 9s.
How expensive are Newtons?

I have the Newton Distancias
I love them. So light. Relatively low heel to toe drop. It's the perfect long distance shoe IMO
I'll probably be getting the Distancia S here shortly. I probably have 500+ miles on my Distancias right now

FWIW, you can find them on sale for about $100-$115 at roadrunndersports.com every now and then

Tried them for a while. Even ease into them as they suggest. I just couldn't get used to the "lugs" under my fore foot. I know run in Saucony Mirage (the 1st edition)
I made the mistake and didn't load up on this model. I purchased the Mirage II and its just not the same.

not really
I've always run in minimalist shoes, and I'm a midfoot striker, I had no problems with them right out of the box
but one of my friends just bought the Distancia S, and it took him a bit to get used to them, but he still loves them

I would also love to try Newtons. Ive heard good things from friends. I run in kinvara's for short distances and Asics for longer for more support. Would also like to try Altra Zero Drop

i run in asics right now, but i'm thinking of buying some brooks for my next running shoe
what is the general consensus on brooks'?

I've had the Newton Motions since May and love them. I've always had problems with shin splints and I think the newtons have helped my form. I did ease into them.

I've run in Mizunos for years.
I use the Musha 4 for 5ks. I use the Elixir 7 for 10ks and the wave precision 13 for longer distances

Used Mizuno until 2002, Rider 2000 was the last great shoe Mizuno made. They went after the market and designed colors and mass produced the shoe and it went to shite. Went to Brooks Adrenaline for 9 years. Learned to run on forefoot and changed to Brooks Ravenna. Tried Newtons but my right foot could not adjust to the shoe. Went back to the Ravenna and it is a great shoe for mild/mod overpronator mid/forefoot strikers. I may try another Newton with a little more stability for my right foot. I don't know why b/c the Ravenna's are great. Asics are too heavy, and the lighter weight trainers are too light with no stability. However, the Asics Nimbus is the most comfortable shoe to wear for everyday casual, but not to run in they're too soft. Good luck !

I only started running in March of this year and bought my 1st pair at a store in Lafayette. Not sure what all brands I tried on BUT I ended up with Brooks Glycerine adn LOVE them. Bought the new Glycerine 10s in July adn got shin splints ... so I've been stockpiling Glycerine 9s when I can find them.
I love love love them ... can't tell you what type foot strike I have as no one has ever told me and I can't exactly see myself when running. I swear by my shoes!
91TIGER, which store in LFT do you use?? Both??

I've been in Newtons for about a year now. They are pricey, but you get way more miles outside of them than you do other running shoes because they wear from the outside in, not reversed like other running shoes.
Basically, when the legs get flat with the shoe at any point, swap them out. I got almost 500 on my last pair so basically, the life of 1.5 shoes for me in what I ran in previously.
It takes a while to make the transition though, especially if you are not a mid/fore foot runner already. If you are, you can probably safely transition in a couple months. If you are changing your stride as you get into Newtons (like me), count on 6-8+ months to fully transition.

Sorry had to leave for family dinner, just sat down today and screen is on same post. Anyway I never buy from stores here in town. If you do go to Geaux Run b/c you can return the shoes up to 30 days if you don't like them. I believe Tri Running used to do the same thing, not sure anymore. However, they tend to push whatever shoe they buy in bulk (get good deals on) instead of the best shoe for you. Yes they are a business but they're not podiatrists either. I try on shoes at Academy/Bell's and order them from Roadrunnersports.com, Holabirdsports.com, or ZBsports.com. As far as your arch / foot, go to Roadrunnersports.com and they have a diagram you can follow to determine your category. Wet your feet and stand on concrete, it will leave a pattern you can match to the diagrams. Good Luck !
