| Unrealistic expectations (Posted on 10/6/12 at 1:26 am)
With the new ownership, Anthony Davis and Austin Rivers in place with a young energetic core from last year, along with some favorable free agent acquisitions (and retaining the cornerstone) there is a lot to be excited about for the hornets future. Sometimes we let this excitement carry us away and lead us to unrealistic expectations. That said, what would you consider to be a successful season and what would you consider a disappointment? Are you expecting an opening night win against the spurs? How about a playoff berth?

I think it'll be better for the longterm success of the Hornets if they can get another high draft pick to put next to Davis & Rivers

ya, i agree...it's a young team. I'm really hoping and thinking this team will compete for a playoff spot...that's about all we can hope for. the team is too young...we're gonna see a lot to be excited for in the future. Ryan Anderson Eric Gordon ....the only legitimate players that we KNOW we have. Lopez, Vasquez, Davis, Rivers, hopefully can make this team a contender some day.

I think playoffs berth is a successful season. Anyone expecting more than that is setting themselves up for disappointment

I know this has been answered before but how much money did the hornets save from acquiring rashard Lewis and what would be some wise moves to do with that money?

If we're at least still in the playoff discussion near the end of the season then I'll consider it a very successful year. I'd be disappointed if we finish with a bottom 5 record again.

Not sure yet. If I remember correctly, that cap relief really comes into play next offseason. Here's the list of free agents next year: LINK Just sayin'. ETA: I'd love to be able to get Al Jefferson to put at C next to Davis. He's only 27 and has a great offensive game to complement Davis' defense. He's not too shabby of a shot blocker either.

Championship or failure imo. Seriously though, 7th seed would be baller, although 8th or just missing playoffs would be more realistic. Disappointment would be Gordon missing half the season and semi tank year again.

Buying him out saved $10m this year. We've already made all the moves we can make from the buyout. The trade freed us of the $22m combined that Okafor and Ariza were making NEXT season. Depending on whose options we pick up next year (Lopez all but certain, Vasquez HIGHLY likely, Aminu very iffy, Henry and Warrick will be let go) we will definitely have enough money to go after one of the smaller max guys, or players in the $13m range (Iggy, Al Jefferson, maybe Josh Smith). Having money for a bigger max guy like CP3 or Bynum isn't a sure thing. Unfortunately, in terms of players we could realistically get, next year isn't a very good FA class. SGs are solid, SFs are pretty bad, and PG/C is top heavy (CP3, Dwight, Bynum), with CP3 being a long shot to return and the other two likely unwilling to ever play in NOLA, regardless of how much we offer and how good our team is.
