| Simple newb Romney question. (Posted on 10/6/12 at 5:18 am)
As someone who pays very little attention to politics and hasn't voted once in the three times I've had the chance to in a Presidential election(yes I know I'm what's wrong with this country) I have a question. During Primary season the knock on Governor Romney was he wasn't Republican enough(or at least he was attacked with that) Ive heard a few of my more liberal friends say that while they don't want Republican in the White House, Romney is one of the least objectionable choices out there. Almost saying that he and President Obama are just different sides of same coin? So question, is this true? I know there are still important differences btw the 2, but this campaign aside does Governor Romney's history show a pretty centric POV? ETA To make a long question short(to late) Political spectrum in America was a 1-10 (1=far left 10=far right) where would u put Governor Romney juxtaposed to someone like President Bush or farther out there Santorium?

Fiscally Romney will be more conservative that Bush. Bush was no conservative when it came to fiscal matters. He spent like a teenager with daddy's credit card. Socially Romney is less conservative than Bush and Santorium. I haven't really heard him campaign much on social issues. Romney is a businessman that sees that our country is in very serious trouble. We gave Obama an opportunity and he has failed. He spent all of his political capital to get Obamacare passed and did nothing about the economy except borrow massive amounts of money for the stimulus. Now we are 16 trillion in debt and sinking about 4 billion a day more into debt. I want to see what Romney can do to save our economy and country.

I honestly don't think it can be put any better. In all honesty the republicans cannot run a true social conservative and expect him to be elected. Conservatives have truly been given an awful name from the left even though this years gallup poll says 40 percent of this country considers themselves conservative. What you need to ask your friends if they actually have any clue what the difference between a conservative and a liberal is especially fiscally because the two couldn't be farther apart. One wants to grow government and regulations, the other wants to shrink the size of government and get out of the way of businesses.

Romney wants to scoop up the undervalued assets of the country, mortgage them to pay handsome dividends, and then sell it to the Chinese at the IPO just before it goes bankrupt. He's had a shite ton of experience doing that so you can trust that it'll be done right.

That's a lie born out of desperation. Its been propagated by the dem machine in hopes of moving traditional republican voters either to the sidelines or to another candidate. Its worked to a degree, there are many out there who have bought into this fallacy without much thought on their part. Romney and obama are two very different candidates, two very different men with two very different hopes for America's future and will prove to be two very different presidents. One is a successful businessman and one is a community organizer. I don't know what coin would have them on different sides.

To add to what has already been said, look out for Paul Ryan. He wants to throw your grandmother over the cliff.

Mitt's Plan If he gets half of this accomplished he will go down in history as much more fiscally conservative than Bush. In fact, does anyone claim that Bush was even remotely a fiscal conservative?

Obama is hard core left. Romney is right leaning moderate. Bush was probably an 8, Romney would probably be anywhere from a 6 to an 8. McCain was like a 4.

You've got to account for the time in which Bush was in office when comparing fiscal policy. Spending wasn't as big of a deal in 2000 as it is today. I think if you put Romney in office in 2000 and Bush in office 2012 they'd do about the same, fiscally speaking. Different times.

Mitt even supported No Child Left Behind. Then there's his running mate Ryan who voted for TARP, the auto bailouts, Medicare expansion, housing subsidies, unemployment extension, a national ID, making the Patriot Act permanent, surveillance without a warrant, No Child Left Behind, keeping troops in Iraq indefinitely, the 2008 stimulus, and the 2009 stimulus.

Polls consistently show that a majority of Americans believe that the two parties must try to work together to get things done. We got sequestration because neither side would budge. We face the fiscal cliff because neither side will budge. The evil word to many on this board is compromise. Reagan compromised because it was the best way to get things done for the good of the country. Clinton compromised for the same reason. Look at how both are perceived today. Romney compromised with the 87% Democratic, veto-proof Democratic legislature in Massachusetts, and actually got some things he wanted in exchange. Reagan worked with Tip O'Neill, Clinton worked with GOP congressional leaders. Compromise offends purists and I understand that. But when trying to manage a superpower, there has to be give and take, the goal being to take more for your side than you give. Bi-partisanship was mentioned a few times in the debate. Romney came across as far more willing to work across the aisle, referencing the situation he dealt with for four years in Massachusetts, while everyone knows how intransigent Obama has been in that regard. The reaction to the debate certainly indicates that mainstream America recognizes that without some degree of bi-partisanship in the next four years, the economy will be further crippled. Compromise is an art, not a weakness. It does not mean a 50-50 split between two proposing sides - it could easily be 75-25. The alternative is a hardline no-compromise Obama Part 2.0, with predictable economic results. Off to watch the Tigers ...

Not voting for the Presidential election three times means you have NO INTEREST in politics whatsoever, so why bother asking about the race now?

I'm sure someone could make a pretty convincing argument that if you were really paying attention to politics you wouldn't vote. Just because someone votes does not mean they have an interest in politics and just because someone chooses not to vote does not mean they do not follow politics.
