Restaurant/Tipping scenario.......WWYD in this situation??

May or may not have happened to me tonight. Let's just pretend your 95 year old Grandfather takes you out to a nice restaurant. You don't bring any money because he's obviously paying. He's old, stuck in his ways, and almost always leaves a 15% tip no matter what. You've tried to explain that really good service deserves 20%, as it's the norm nowadays. He isn't having any of it, as the mere mention of change sets him off.

So the two of you get great service, and he leaves $8 on a $70 bill (peeked over while he was signing). Saying something would've only pissed him off, especially since he was already ticked about his entree not being perfect.

So WWYD in this situation?

A). Leave as quickly as possible before the waitress comes back to collect her tip.
B). Grab her on the way out, explain the situation, and just apologize (knowing she's cursing your name while putting on a fake smile the whole time)
C). Take Grandfather home, drive to ATM, get money out, go get change, then drive all the way back across town to leave a couple extra bucks

I know it's not a huge deal.....a couple bucks is not the end of the world. But this is how servers pay their bills, and it's embarrassing to leave a tip like that (especially at a nice place with great service). Funny thing is, my Grandpa leaves 50%+ on crappy Chinese delivery bills (even when tip is already included)

Okay, so I only took a couple of math classes to get my BA, but I don't think 8 bucks is 15% of 70 dollars.

You should slink out of there and make it up to her later.

I've been in situations like this and it is best to be prepared in advance.

That's a weird statement. So you normally have $0 in your wallet? Only would have taken ~$5 to make the server "whole". (20%)

My Father is of the old school as well. He's strictly a 15% tipper if that - unless it's a buffet, in which case he'll leave 10% or less, and whenever we go out to eat, I need to somehow sneak behind his back to take care of the waitstaff.

After one meal he went to get the car for me Mum, and I took a look a peek at the receipt he left for the waiter...$5 on a $60 tab. Since then, I always bring a few paper bucks with me. I found out that he doesn't really approve of my adding to the tip if he knows about it, so I've found ways around that. I usually take a "restroom" break and talk discreetly with my waiter, briefly explain the situation that I've been a waiter, my Father is a shitty tipper, so here's a few extra bucks to make up for the crap tip he's going to leave. You'll get fantastic service from that point on too.

Another thing my Dad does is that he won't tip on 2 for 1 deals, gift cards, or any sort of coupon. In other words, if any part of the meal is comped, 15% of 0 is 0.

That's absurd. Unless your Grandfather kidnaps you for dinner, you'll know in the future to put a couple of dollar bills in your Jorts.

Deserve an arse whipping for trying to tell your grandfather how to spend HIS money when HE is paying.

You worried about the tip? Then you need to pay or split the bill.

Man, that stinks that you were put on this situation. I don't think there is really anything you can do.

My parents are not good tippers. They are just old school and rarely eat out. I always had to add a little to the tip and I didn't mind if they saw me do it either.
These days, they just give me the receipt to fill in tip and total for them.

I don't think we have moved to a standard 20%.

The amount of tip shown in the OP is well below 20%.

I don't think it's old school or old people syndrome. My father is 87 and he tips like he's a fricking Rockefeller. fricking waiters at Jubans are living on my inheritance.

Now grandpa, well he's dead.

I think this is a great idea.

As for OP and his grandfather, it's a tough situation, but he is 95. No use discussing it with him at all. Ever.

My standard is 20%. Or around that anyway. I always round up on my tickets anyway. Like if it is a 55 dollar tab, I'm probably just writing 70 on the ticket. Obviously, 15 bucks is more than 20%, but we are talking about 2-3 dollars here and that isn't going to break me. Unlike my mother who pulls a calculator out at every meal.

I like this answer, I have been in same situation, pawpaw thought $5 was plenty tip regardless of how much the bill was, I also have enough respect for him to let him tip how he choose when he was paying, he never tried to tell me I tipped too much when I paid, to each his own, just let it go

This is the correct answer. If you wait tables and can't happily deal with the occasional old geezer who doesn't know any better, then you need to get the frick out.

my husband will usually bring cash if his dad is paying for dinner because he knows his dad doesn't tip enough. Usually he'll wait until his dad has walked out, then go back and add more money to the bill if it's still sitting on the table.

How many of you guys tip on the after-tax total? Probably almost everyone.

If you do you're tipping the waiter for collecting tax. I usually tip 20% on the pretax tolal.
