I was there last night and it was a horrible call. The call was so late that it looked like a excuse to fix the game. I wish they had tried to make the Braves forfeit. It would have been a riot.

Just curious, why have the 3 errors not been mentioned in this thread? Or the stupid baserunning move? I'm not really saying it was a good call, but there's so much fallback on it by Braves fans that it's more embarassing than throwing bottles on the field. You lost the game because the Braves played like shite.

I agree, that was a bad call but the game was lost for the reasons you mentioned

The anger burst was that it looked like the ump made the worst mistake of the cards not count. Oh, and the Braves did play poorly. But the lateness made it much, much worse.

Agreed. But the the gravity of that call was absolutely huge. If you were there the momentum in that place was insane. That call absolutely murdered it. We go from bases loaded with 1 out to 2nd and 3rd with 2. I'm not saying we would have done anything but there is something to say about momentum in the playoffs and that call absolutely killed it. I would be comfortable saying that we would have put up 2 that inning with the way things were going. Just my guess though. That said, I'm glad they through bottles. It was complete bull shite. I hated this WC scenario since the day they announced it. There is absolutely no way you can justify 162 games coming down to 9 innings. That doesn't determine the best team by any means. They're going to have to do away with this terrible experiment because it just doesn't make sense. As for the call itself. I don't see any defense for it. I was at the game so I didn't see any of the commentary on it but the rule is in place to keep the infielder from letting the ball drop and get an easy double play because the runners hold on fly balls. It also has to be an easy play for the infielder to make. That was not the case here at all. As deep as the ball was hit all the runners took regular leads as if preparing to advance if it dropped. If it were a typical infield fly type ball they would have only been a step off the base. They didn't need the protection the infield fly rule provides them in this case. Also the infield fly is supposed to be called off the bat. The right field umpire (hate the extra umpires for playoffs) called it right before it hit the ground. He wouldn't have called it if it had been dropped which is bull shite because that call is never contingent on whether it is caught or not.

Has anyone ever seen the infield fly rule called 30 feet into the outfield before tonight? Maybe its a technically correct call. I've just never seen it before on a similar play.

I've seen it called a few feet, maybe 10, into the outfield but NEVER that deep. Typically it's when the infielder has to take a few steps into the outfield to make the simple catch. I've never seen it called like that last night.

If it makes the Braves fans feel any better, the Cards experienced one of the worst calls in MLB history in the 1985 world series against the KC Royals. It forced a game 7 which took away our momentum. We lost. However, that blown call actually cost us a game that we were about to win. Last Night's blown call didn't determine the game. You may have scored a run or two, but you entered the inning down 3 runs. I believe that even with bases loaded, Motte (one of the best closets in America) would have got us out of that inning. It sucks for Braves' fans. The call simply makes the loss far more bitter. But be honest with yourselves...the better team won last night. The Cards would have won the game anyhow. You have to put the benefit of the doubt on the team up 3 runs in the 8th, who is well known as one of the best clutch teams in the history of baseball. The Braves are more known for dropping the ball in big high pressure games.

Judgement or not it was not the right call. My biggest problem with MLB is the "it's part of the game" attitude. It is so stale and old. This isn't the 1920's, the game should be evolving and should be using every means possible to ensure the integrity of the game. There is a reason MLB has fallen so far behind the NFL and NBA and I believe one of the reasons is the sports refusal to change their attitude that bad calls are just part of the game so to the fan that pays good money and invest so much time and energy into a team sorry, it's just part of the game. There are too many other things and sports to follow these days vs 70 years ago.

That's the thing that makes the one game playoff so bad: one game doesn't decide who the better team is. You were the better team in that game last night, that doesn't show who the better team is overall though, and you know that.

That's pretty much my thought on it. This isn't missing a bang-bang play at first. This was just an instance of an umpire inserting himself into the game where he had no place or reason for doing so and it's really not forgivable in a game like that. Did that fat turd really think he was protecting the runners? Like they are gonna turn two from left field. Pathetic.
