I'm not a big baseball fan so this may be a stupid question but how in the hell did that official think that was anywhere near the infield? That ball landed at least 25 feet into the outfield. If my understanding of the rules is correct, than I can see why the fans were so pissed

It doesn't have to be in the infield. Its a judgment call if the official immediately judges that an infielder can make a routine play on a fly ball then it is ruled as a infield fly. The problem is that the official used poor judgement and he used it indecisively. The biggest problem is that it wasn't immediately called.

The call looked bad...but that call didn't cost you the game. You already had one out and were 3 runs down. It may have screwed the momentum, but odds are the Cards would have got out of that inning ahead anyhow.

No way of knowing. McCann iirc is the NL active leader in grand slams. Would have been interesting to see STL at least have to pitch to him with the bases juiced and 1 out instead of pitching around him as they did with the open base.

I am with you though that the Braves cost themselves the game, not the umps.

Don't really like how Selig has changed the playoff setup over the years but the bottom line is the Braves did not deserve to win.

I think it was a bad call. But some analysts on ESPN who know a lot more about the rule than I do (or most baseball fans) said that the call could have legitimately went either way.

It's not the Cardinals' fault. Yet those fricking white trash Braves fans threw trash at Cards players. What a disgrace.

Now the Cards will win the World Series again, 12 in 12, just to make this game that more significant...and pathetic.

Well, many of us don't have an issue with the infield fly rule occurring in the outfield because the rule says it can occur in the outfield. Judgement call.

they why specify the "infield"? Just call it the fly rule.....or is the "infielder" fly rule...as in if it's an infielder on a pop fly the rule can take effect.

Also, if it's "normal effort"...then why don't Infielder's take advantage of that and run around looking confused so that the ump won't call it?

You make the same point that analysts have made...this call was no one's fault. The rule, which dates back to the late 1800s, never has been amended and it is a very grey rule.

They need to amend the rule to make it more clear -more black and white so there's less confusion.

I never said it cost us the game, I agree that it didn't. Errors and just overall bad baseball cost us the game however that call certainly did not help our chances at a comeback. My main problem with the call is the tardiness of it. If he called it immediately off the bat I would get it. Yet he waited until the ball was almost catchable, at that point he should have realized that it was deep enough that the base runners had no need for protection. As long as he waited he had plenty of time to correctly judge the safety of the best runners (that is the sole reason that the rule is even in place after all ). He fricked up plain and simple.

However if the braves wouldn't have had multiple frick ups earlier in the game they wouldn't have been in that situation to begin with.

his is NOT true Braves fans.... Throwing shite at the players? Pathetic.... That was the most embarrassing thing I have watched in a long time in Professional Sports.

I'm glad the fans did it. The team had some momentum and that bitch of an umpire took it away with that BS call. Fans pay way too much money to have to watch a bad product official the game. And to all the people making their "Chipper remarks"...well frick that too, because he's the one that got the Braves down 3 runs.

Fans shouldn't have thrown stuff but the immediate telling of this story from articles I've read seems to be spinning it as yeah it was a horrible call but the fans behavior after means we are ok with it.

The story in the morning should be like 60% this horrible call 10% the fans behavior and 30% how even without blown call Braves still probably lose that game.

I didn't throw anything, but I was glad people did. That deserved far more than a few boos. After about 15 minutes they were threatening forfeit, would have loved to have seen them try that.

My EXACT thoughts. It's about damn time Atlanta fans got their dander up about something. I was in section 215 and protected under the terrace but an older lady got her head bustead open by a bottle which pretty much let us know that 'ok the fun is over'..
We were all 'daring' the umps to call a forfeit...it possibly would've gotten truly bad.
But, not gonna lie, even though I didn't throw a damn thing (nor would I ever..unless someone insulted islam ) it felt great to get out 20+ years of frustration as a Braves fan, even if only verbally.
Plus I truly expected the choke..so I bought the tickets specifically to see chipper's last game.

THe double standard is quite funny though.
We do nothing: ermagerd brerves fanz are totes lame and non passionate
We show some true emotion: ermagerd brerves fernz are totes trashzzzzz

Bottles on the field is wasnt that bad IMO. Wonder what would've happen had they made that call at a Phillies or a Yankees home game. Riots? Fires in the streets? There's no telling.

It is what Bud Selig asked for and i am glad he got it When you are a fan of a team that plays 162 games over 5 months, wins 94 games, and finishes 6 games ahead of the next team, but are then asked to play a fluke 1 game "series" only to have one of the worst postseason calls in the history of the sport significantly impact your teams chances of winning then expressing that frustration seems apropos. Oh by the way, it happened on the night that the greatest braves player of this generation who fans had been watching for 20 years ended his career. If you weren't there, you don't understand.
