White gold was created as a cheaper substitute for platinum. Since platinum is much denser than gold, it will hold up for generations. Expect to spend quite a bit more, but you get quite a bit more with platinum. Over the years it will develop a rich patina unique to it's properties.

I'm thinking platinum or tungsten carbide:
ETA: that platinum ring is only $1k, and you can get them for less, compared to what you are spending on her rings, and the fact that hopefully you will wear it everyday for the rest of your life, it's not very expensive

If you are a man that uses his hands for his job i.e. Carpenter, Contractor, etc. , I would go with plastic. You break your finger and have a gold, silver, platinum ring than you can kiss that finger goodbye.

If you don't care and she can afford it, I would get you platinum. I let my husband pick out what he wanted and he wanted to choose tungsten but in the end he picked white gold. Yellow gold was never an option. You can always tell the people over 40, bc they have yellow gold.
