I'll guess that he means "no one is entitled to success, you need to earn it." Thats what I have to GUESS he is saying too. It just came out like a fricking train wreck.
It's just more pandering. Talk about how awesome the middle class is. Subtly hint that everyone who is wealthy has never worked a day in their lives to obtain that wealth. Promote opportunity for all in a way that implies it doesn't currently exist.

Yes, I remember that one, too. For a second I thought the quote I remembered was addressed to this point but I seem to remember it being about the deficit and towards the end of the debate. Crap. I'm going to have to read the transcript again. Regardless, he is correct in his point in that Romney could have used this over & over again during the debate. I was kind of hoping it would be the theme of several ads following the debate.

Here it is:
quote:
ROMNEY: Simpson-Bowles, the president should have grabbed that. LEHRER: No, I mean, do you support Simpson-Bowles? ROMNEY: I have my own plan. It's not the same as Simpson- Bowles. But in my view, the president should have grabbed it. If you wanted to make some adjustments to it, take it, go to Congress, fight for it. OBAMA: That's what we've done, made some adjustments to it, and we're putting it forward before Congress right now, a $4 trillion plan ... ROMNEY: But you've been -- but you've been president four years ... (CROSSTALK) ROMNEY: You've been president four years. You said you'd cut the deficit in half. It's now four years later. We still have trillion-dollar deficits. The CBO says we'll have a trillion-dollar deficit each of the next four years. If you're re-elected, we'll get to a trillion-dollar debt. I mean, you have said before you'd cut the deficit in half. And this -- I love this idea of $4 trillion in cuts. You found $4 trillion of ways to reduce or to get closer to a balanced budget, except we still show trillion-dollar deficits every year. That doesn't get the job done. Let me come back and say, why is it that I don't want to raise taxes? Why don't I want to raise taxes on people? And actually, you said it back in 2010. You said, "Look, I'm going to extend the tax policies that we have now; I'm not going to raise taxes on anyone, because when the economy is growing slow like this, when we're in recession, you shouldn't raise taxes on anyone." Well, the economy is still growing slow. As a matter of fact, it's growing much more slowly now than when you made that statement. And so if you believe the same thing, you just don't want to raise taxes on people. And the reality is it's not just wealthy people -- you mentioned Donald Trump. It's not just Donald Trump you're taxing. It's all those businesses that employ one-quarter of the workers in America; these small businesses that are taxed as individuals. You raise taxes and you kill jobs. That's why the National Federation of Independent Businesses said your plan will kill 700,000 jobs. I don't want to kill jobs in this environment.

I had posted in a thread before the debate (about Michelle saying debates made her nervous) that maybe she worried that he'd slip up and say what he was really thinking. When he said that, I laughed my head off. He almost made it to the end before it slipped.

I never would have imagined we would have a sitting president be reelected by campaign against the success of Americans...to run down the American Dream...we are truly finished. It is not about Obama, he is merely a manifestation of what we are as a nation now.

I think that the Preezy meant to say that nobody is entitled to success unless Preezy SAYS you are entitled to success. AND, the only people Preezy allows to succeed are his FedGov workers, his Crony Capitalists in bed with Obama with money contributions, his political allies and sycophantic media.

I am by no means an Obama supporter but....the founders agreed with this statement. What Obama is trying to say-rather poorly- is that birth does not guarantee success. If he didn't have so much marxism in him, i'd say he was promoting a meritocracy.

If Mitt Romney had said, literally, the exact same thing, this board would've been thrilled that he was fighting the "entitlement mentality". This thread really has made me laugh.

Oh, I'm sure it has. Bottom line: your guy really needs to find a better way of articulating himself. Off teleprompter, he's making himself look like an imbecile on the order of his VP.
