Have been following F1 since 1993 and love the cars, but there's no way I could drive one. The thought alone that something could go wrong would probably keep the average person too scared to go fast enough to warm up the tires and brakes to the working temperatures. Also, the neck muscles you need to be able to handle the cornering and all for more than a few minutes must be crazy.

yea, i know for a fact i couldn't. i love F1 races...i've been to the one in palm beach several times, it is mind boggling how fast those things are going

Formula 1 has a distinct international flavor in that they race all over the world and teams and drivers come from different countries (but most team factories are based in Europe). F1 is considered the pinnacle of motor sport racing. They have the best cars, best teams, best drivers and race at the most popular circuits around the world. IndyCar is mostly oval racing, but no race on the F1 calendar is raced on an oval. Well, they raced around a 1/4 of an oval during the start finish straight when they ran the US GP in Indianapolis, but F1 stopped racing at the Indy circuit a few years ago.
F1 racing is also a test bed where car companies try out the latest and greatest technologies before bringing the same technology to road cars. Paddle shifters, ceramic disc brakes, brake energy regeneration etc. came from F1 orginally.

As well as being fast in a straight line, F1 cars also have incredible cornering ability. Grand Prix cars can negotiate corners at significantly higher speeds than other racing cars because of the intense levels of grip and downforce. Cornering speed is so high that Formula One drivers have strength training routines just for the neck muscles . Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya claimed to be able to perform 300 repetitions of 50 lb (23 kg) with his neck - LINK
If I remember the Top Gear episode right, I think Richard made a comment about how his neck was sore from just driving the car and how his neck muscles weren't strong enough to endure stress they take.

Great video. It is the famous Eau Rouge curve at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps cicuit. The best part is almost all F1 cars take the curve flat-out when it is dry. It also rains often at this circuit, so the first lap is always tricky because drivers don't know how much grip they have. But the best drivers like Hamilton, Alonso etc. still tend to take the curve flat out even with the track slightly damp on the opening laps. That curve literally separates the men (Hamilton, Alonso) from the boys (Massa, et al.)
The challenge for drivers has always been to take Eau Rouge-Raidillon flat out. Regular touring cars can take the corner at 160–180 km/h, Formula One at over 300 km/h.[11] This is due to the huge amount of downforce on the cars. World Champion Jacques Villeneuve once spoke of the effects of downforce saying that to get through the corner they have to go faster as the faster the car is going the more downward force there is, thus explaining the phenomenon of Eau Rouge flat out. - LINK

They came out with this 2 seater McLaren Mercedes in 1998, back when they were still using a 3.0L V10. Probably the closest any of us could have ever gotten to go around a track like a bat out of hell

I think you referring to CART, or IRL. F1 only came to Indy the last few years, and TX this year. Those have been the only stops in the US after an absense of nearly a decade.
