Simple solution, for every 100 year old live oak they cut down, plant 2, in 95 years there will be plenty of 100 year old oaks.
Let's name the really desirable and cool parts of Baton Rouge and see what the common denominator is. Southdowns Capital Heights Old Goodwood Hundred Oaks Garden District Old Beauregard LSU itself Highland Rd Clearly the trees The trees may be one of the few truly cool things about this city. Take that away and it might as well be an industrial waste dump, and at the rate we're going and the lack of interest in redevelpoing rather than leaving, I am not shitting you when I say I'm honestly not too sure trees will be on the radar in this place in 95 years.

I can care less about the trees I am more pissed that they are starting another road project in the same area that has Millerville Rd, Oneal Lane, and the Oneal/ S Harrells Ferry Rd intersection currently under construction not to mention the Woodlake Rd bridge is closed. Can the City Parish not start a new project until those are at least finished.
Just wait until construction starts on O'Neal Lane between SHFR and George O'Neal. It should be coming in the next year.

Sound reason is out In is political rhetoric and hackery like following football teams, one with blue unis and the other with red. Both sides are so immature, or at least those who draw such absurd lines in the sand and follow their party like it's a football rivalry. If someone is in favor of cutting hundred year old landmarks down, I'm sure they don't see the value in preserving hundred year old buildings either as long as a cool McDonalds is being built. It's not pussification. It's an erosion of values we place on things the should be important to everyone, and is quite non political.

It's threads like these that reminds me how narrow minded and miserable most people on here really are. Or should I just be clear and say dumbasses. It is a few trees in the way of a much needed road project. It's not clearing the forest. That area has tons of trees. Just do the proper thing and plant more in the appropriate place. Entergy cuts trees and gets bitched at while trying to keep powerlines safe then gets bitched at because they didn't cut someone's tree and their power went out. City Parish tries to build a road and gets bitched at. Yet they still get bitched at because of traffic volume on an old two lane road. Y'all are some miserable pukes and I wish you all would move to that great mistake by the lake and enjoy your Darrell's fake po boy. Then I wouldn't have to sit in traffic.

Laird said the tree cutting makes her want to move to St. Tammany Parish, where live oak trees of a certain size cannot be cut down without the parish’s approval.
This is because of what happened to the Chinchuba Oaks years ago. There's no comparing the sickly looking trees on Jones Creek to the Chinchuba Oaks.

This. Baton Rouge has PLENTY of trees, especially in that area.

Apparently Mrs. Laird isn't aware the developers are doing their best to turn Covington/Mandeville into Metaire/Kenner, two the ugliest, most generic places I've been in my entire life. There is no place more generic than Metairie.

Exactly. I just saw an article in the Advocate that listed Baton Rouge as the most tree-covered city in the U.S.

That study was done by someone at Southern University if I remember correctly. Simple solution though, if you have to cut down three live oaks, plant 12 more along the street in their place. Or however many necessary depending on the proper spacing for their root systems.

it sure is amazing BR is the only city in the world with chain restaurants. there are apparently none at all in Dallas, Houston, Atl, Austin........ every restaurant in the desireable top cities is independently owned by people who only buy their food at organic local markets

only trouble with this idea is that it takes, about 20-30 years for the young trees to even begin to resemble the 90 YO trees removed. I like the idea of planting more, but these aren't Pine trees that grow quickly. So you can't really replace the esxisting trees by planting new ones.

Of course, but we aren't going to get anywhere if we never cut down any trees either. If you look at pictures of LSU's campus when it was freshly built all the trees are really small, now they are crazy valuable. It's just a good compromise rather than cutting the trees down and being on their way.
