If you don't want cuts to SS, Medicare, and Defense spending then you shouldn't be complaining. It's mandatory if we want to turn things around.

I agree on SS and Medicare. Like I said though I don't think it actually serves us well to cut defense spending. Defense spending can have a positive impact on our economy by producing jobs.

Who do you think gets cut on Medicare/ Healthcare?

You don't think providers are the first people affected? Home Healths, Doctors, Nurses etc. always get cut first. I would argue those people have a much higher function economically than a lot of our military. I love our military and everyone that serves but I believe the military budget can go down to the Clinton Era levels of spending.

I actually disagree with Romney on this. There is wasteful government spending out there to be sure but PBS isn't one of them.

Right - but if federal funding is only 1/6 of their funding maybe they can exist on their own?

re: Why is defunding PBS an unpopular idea?

I think this is a big part of the problem with cutting spending. Many programs like PBS are ingrained in our culture and very loved bc they are remembered fondly. In the days before cable (Dora, Nick Jr, Sprout, etc), PBS offered the only educational children's programs on tv and many Americans grew up watching these programs. They are tied to our childhood and are remembered fondly.

Any time to talk about cutting something like this, there will be an emotional response to it. Emotional responses are hard to overcome sometimes. That said, PBS no longer offers the only educational programs out there and many of them have more viewers. Furthermore, those that are offered would be picked up by other outlets IF PBS failed simply bc they are so embraces by our culture. I say IF bc, if PBS's response statement is true and they are funded on a 6-1 basis ($6 private donations to $1 public funding), they can easily survive without public funding if they made cuts like any other business.

NPR is great.
But it is outside the size and scope of government.
Especially when we are literally borrowing money to keep it afloat that we will have to repay later.
But try telling that to a Liberal and you risk eye-gouging.
I look forward to a day when it is defunded and people like me who enjoy it, send in an annual check or buy a subscription, just like other things that are not liberal pet-projects.

The problem is there are tens of thousands of extremely small goverment funded programs.

I would like to see the full list. Then we can see what we are talking about and maybe decide to save a handful or not.

It's one of the few government services that I like. I don't listen to NPR, but I like the childrens programming and I listen to the local 1930's radio station.

I don't care if they cut PBS and NPR. I just find it odd that Republicans are making this an issue when Romney wants to spend over 2 trillion more than Obama on defense.

Defense is constitutionally mandated expenditure. Public Broadcasting is something LBJ dreamed up.

Cut 100 small, unnecessary things and you have done something significant.

I disagree. You've gotta start with the big 3 (SS, Medicade/Medicare, and defense spending) or you're just wasting everyone's time.

Defense spending is constitutionally mandated (as mentioned above)...not to mention we are on the verge of another world war because there is an entire religion dedicated to destroying us and everything we stand for. If 2 trillion saves a million lives, it's worth every penny.

Well it doesn't mandate that we spend more than every other country combined.

You know how I know you're a neo-con?

Who's lives are we talking about? and how is this increased defense spending gonna prevent that? Are we not well armed enough?

I don't find NPR to be very partisan. Their newscasts are actually some of the most non-partisan broadcasts I've heard. They just tell the story without opinions.

Generally half-way agree with you. They have a certain "enlightened" approach to the news which correlates to a liberal perspective. But the depth of their coverage usually makes up for it.

However since the conventions they have been in full-tilt pro-Obama mode. The morning after the debates was the worst. No mention of Romney dominating, instead it was a story about how Romney's numbers were bad and some random voter complaining how Romney hates women because he is against abortion.

This morning there was some grudging acknowledgment of Romney's win, but quickly followed by the jobs report.

They were always in Obama's camp; the shot at Big (government) Bird just put them in all-out battle stations mode.
