Average doesn't mean bad. It just means average.

Not even close to one of the best in the city. Actually not even the best at Ochsner. And while I would personally rather have surgery at Ochsner, I would rather see a board certified surgeon that trained in the LSU system. They get much better experience than someone that trained at Ochsner because they are allowed to do much more.

Why do people get all up in arms when we have cuts to education and hospital systems. At some point we have to be fricking financially responsible .
There is a difference between cutting spending in a way that is efficient and well planned, and just making planket cuts focussed entirely on only two aspects of state spending. There are many obstacles in place that limit possible cuts exclusively to education and healthcare. So instead of all state departments sharing in the burden of budget cuts, and thereby diluting the effect on any one department, we have massive and debilitating cuts to two departments. This is not fiscal responsibility. This irresponsible and shortsighted.

I've heard that Ochsner is looking at LSU med in Shreveport and Children's Touro is looking at LSUNO. State is actively marketing their hospitals

i havent lived in la in a couple of years. wouldnt it make better sense to make these cuts evenly spread throughout all the state departments? or are the education and healtcare systems need that much change to them

Exactly right. Even worse the administration is using the current financial crisis to further their reform agenda.

Yes that would make much more sense, but the rest of the state budget is tied up as "non-discretionary" spending. The only "discretionary" spending the state can legally cut is that allotted to higher education and healthcare. The rest tied up in things like salaries and pension plans for civil workers (teachers, police officers, etc). Everyone is too chicken shite to reform all those obligations, so instead they just slash education and healthcare every year. Edit: And I don't say this with the idea that all those other obligations aren't important. But it makes more sense to dilute the cuts across a broad range of programs with intelligent discretion to determine where the cuts should be more drastic depending on what programs are more expendable and which programs can tolerate bigger cuts, etc. It is far more devastating to our state's future to debilitate higher education and healthcare while leaving everything else untouched.

Some of y'all make it sound like hospitals are the only things that could be cut. There are plenty of more deserving areas that could be cut. What about the insane number of public colleges that we have? Let's cut them. I am without a doubt biased, but it is quite idiotic to cut state medical facilities and teaching institutions. Also, maybe someone can clarify this for me, but I've heard that the NOLA med institution was one of the main reasons for this. They were hemorrhaging money or something. Any truth to that?

This is also a great point. These cuts are being forced upon higher education without giving Board of Regents and other administrative bodies the freedom to intelligently implement those cuts. So again, instead of intelligently reforming the system and fundamentally changing it to increase efficiency, we are destroying the quality of education at our most important and most productive universities.

This makes me truly worried about medical education in this state. Though perhaps not big names in research etc. the lsu hospitals provide this state with clinical physicians that are battle tested and seen and done all due to having the experience that only comes from having treated a wide range of pathology in an environment with large amount of autonomy. That can only be truly found in a large, public hospital that is treating an indigent population.

He received awesome care there.
The missions of public and private hospitals are not exactly the same. Public hospitals are training grounds. Much of your research also occurs at public teaching hospitals. Yes, public hospitls take care of folks that the private ones just as soon not. I recall back in 1978 when I was on staff at E.A. Conway our getting a gunshot victim who had laid at a local private hospital for the better part of four hours before they decided to send him to us because he had no insurance. They did some basic stabilization and that was it. Again, keep in mind that this was 1978. Long story short, the patient died. We were not able to do the surgery and had to send him to LSUS. If we could have gotten him 3 hrs earlier, he might have made it, although we will never know. Many times I have known folks who used the charity system and the care was quite comparable and compassionate. Other states also have "public hospitals". They are under county or municipal ownership. We are unique in that we have a statewide network of public hospitals. However, the other states also have public hospitals. They are just packaged a little differently.

i am ok with cutting services to cut spending because you dont have the funds to pay the services, but do people actually believe that if you can fire public employees and hire a private company to provide the same services at a lower cost?
