That's a scary article to anyone who cares about LSU
quote:
Other than clearing the decks of opponents for his plan to privatize Louisiana’s public health care system, it’s not clear why Jindal wants to run LSU. He seems to have little interest in strengthening its educational mission. He’s slashed its budget by an obscene amount (almost half a billion dollars in cuts for Louisiana higher education in the past three years). In that time, state appropriations as a percent of LSU’s budget have gone from 60 percent to about 35 percent. Ten percent of the faculty have left or been laid off. Courses have been cancelled. Class size has grown. Tuition has increased increased dramatically. Jindal doesn’t care much about putting LSU on stronger financial footing and he has made no effort to explain his cuts to students or faculty. What he may care about is the LSU jobs available to his friends and campaign donors. His history of favoritism in other state departments (not to mention his intolerance of dissent) is well known. Perhaps the only reason he hasn’t yet started stuffing LSU with friends and washed-up legislators is that he only recently acquired a strong majority of the LSU Board of Supervisors. Now that Jindal is fully in charge — and has, in interim President Bill Jenkins, an eager and accommodating administrator — who knows what’s in store for the main campus?

One huge issue with the state hospitals is that unlike other-well-ran-hospitals who will abide by the federal laws on medical necessity and not run medically unnecessary tests the state hospitals will run them all, without question. For ex, if you go to Glenwood with multiple orders, they will tell you - if you want this chest xray, you are going to have to pay for it, because medicare wont (per med necessity regs). State hospitals will run the tests and simply not charge anything to anybody. I have done some extrapulations from figures I am famaliar with and the state could save at least 25M per year by just abidding by the law. AT LEAST.

Ochsner has one of the best neuro surgeons in the U.S. in Dr. Sulaiman.

They say that about Shreveport too. I can't recall his name right now.

Yeah, but the biggest problem with the LSU hospitals is that they mostly cater to the "Free Care" patients. Unfortunately, they have to play CYA more than anything.

LSU-S has some good surgeons as well, but Ochsner main campus is better than LSU interim overrall as a surgical facility. Interim's Trauma operation is really good though.

Not disagreeing with you but neurosurgery is not the same as general surgery. Different programs. Oh and his name is Dr. Sulaiman.

Why do people get all up in arms when we have cuts to education and hospital systems. At some point we have to be fricking financially responsible .

I edited just before you posted. They have some other general surgeons that are good as well but sulaiman is the standout there. Interim is fairly average, but it doesn't mean that it is worthless.

I could be wrong but I'm sure Chad Jones would call the doctors that saved his leg more than average.

I understand we have to make cuts, its the cuts he has made and the way he is doing it that pisses me off.

Average is relative in the medical field as you are aware. I'm really not trying to knock interim. They are 3rd best in the state overrall (imo) as a surgical facility and better than most places in the south.

Well, he has to pay for hurricane relief and "the general welfare" somehow. He's destroying this state.

Because these areas get cut every year. They are the only two area the state constitution allows for cuts to be made. Why not spread the burden?
