Historically, only the extremely wealthy were able to truly "retire". What we had in America in the past 50 years was a truly blessed era where lots of middle class people were able to stop working while still enjoying the same lifestyle. Both my parents retired early (before 60) and have lived their same lifestyle for the past 15 years. That is because they saved money and both of them have pensions and worked at the same place for decades. Those days are gone.

Okay scooter, lets do a little math. If you want $750,000 to retire with, over 30 years, that means you'd have to put $25K away per year. You got an extra 25 grand laying around you can save?

Right.

Depends on which field you are in. While the rest of the country is in a recession, my field is not. My dad is in the same field as I am, and will retire next year at the age of 55. I was lucky enough to get into my field relatively early, so hopefully I will be as lucky as he is.

Work visa is the only way you will get in. I nearly took a job there a few years ago and would have done the same. Australia has some of the strictest visa laws on the planet.

My company is working on mine. I'm hoping to be out of here in 6 months. If you are an engineer Australia literally will blow you to get you over there, it's awesome. I'm using my company to expedite it and then I don't know if I'm ever coming back hahaha.
The one problem with going there, and what put me off, is you have to pay into their health care and retirement system. You will also pay more taxes than you would in the US. They withdraw 50% of your check, guaranteed.

No way I'd ever make 30 years with one company, hell I've never made 5.

Well I'm at my 3rd company this year after 5 years with the first and I'll probably have no problem keeping my career here for the next 30 years.

Depressing isn't it? Better to work until we die anyway.

Don't be shocked when that pension plan disappears

Oh I know. I was just trying to make the point that slapping some cash in a savings account is not gonna cut it.
