Disney has really just started doing more AP previews in WDW and DL prior to full guest previews. With the explosion in Disney fan websites and podcasts, though, it looks like Disney has decided it really needs to set dates and publicize them more to appease fans.
I guess it could be a very small part of this Next Gen push Disney is working on. Trying to figure out how they're going to deal with the influx of new guests to the expansion. Interesting.

Especially since they are opening it during the Thanksgiving holiday time. It's already usually crowded around that time.

Well, they've been doing testing on the Next Gen fast pass system for the last several months. My guess is that the timing of this preview is really to help cope with the large crowds that will be in the park for Thanksgiving. They use the AP previews to test out bits and pieces. Then, they use the week or so before Thanksgiving as sort of a "dry run" in hopes that they have minimal set backs during Thanksgiving week. Then they can identify and correct anything really major prior to the official grand opening and Christmas.

This must be something new. I rode Everest at least 5 times in one day during its soft opening. If they changed the rules it would be news to me.
Dang. Had the same thing happen when they were ready to open Expedition Everest. Rode it a ton back to back. I think they were calling it Beta Testing or something like that IIRC. Also it was early opening morning at AK that morning so that helped. That was pretty great.

My wife doesn't ride Everest so I typically hit up the single rider line when we're there. I can knock out 5 or 6 rides in a half an hour.

I've been for Christmas through New Years and it was insane. Things will break so I guess it gives them time to overload the systems to test the limits then fix things for Christmas.

This was definitely the soft opening. If I remember right it was off season so the parks were not crowded. Also the yeti wasn't operational, much like he is now.

I've been in early December, before the crowds get in and it's glorious.

Yes back when it was still Disney owned and operated. I think they sold off the courses or they're being managed by someone else. I have no idea what the quality is like now as this was back in 2004.

I go often and have seen him operational at least 4-5 times. But I've not seen him work 15+ times. He's one of Disney Imagineering's biggest failures (and they don't have many).

yeah I've seen a few people notice things wrong with the dragon. I skipped Fantasmic last trip so I don't even remember what it's supposed to do

Well I guess the strobe effect is working out. As far as the golf courses, I've never played them but they're on my WDW "to-do" list. Disney struck a deal with Arnold Palmer Golf Management back in 2011 to run the courses for them. I can't imagine there would be a decline in the quality of the courses with such a reputable name taking them over.

In reference to Fantasmic, I've seen the Indian canoe get stuck which is near a portion of the show that has some sort of pyrotechnics. I knew something was up because I've seen it so many times but most people were oblivious. I was genuinely worried.

No kidding. I think it's been broken for close to 4 yrs, 3 for sure. The foundation for the yeti is cracked and the only way to fix it is to shut the ride down for a long time.

And the strobe is so dumbed down compared to the working animatronic yeti. He was really awesome.
