I've never seen Johnson debate...as far as Paul is concerned, from an pure debate execution standpoint, no. From an "expand government" standpoint, yes.

Gary Johnson would have held his own, I think. Guy has a message that he [appears] to believe in. Related, Gary Johnson climbs freaking mountains.
Ron Paul, no chance. It's not Pauls ideas or conviction, it is the way they come out of his mouth. I thought Ron was terrible in the Republican debates.

Romney had a really solid debate. I might agree with Paul/Johnson more, but they wouldn't have done as well. Johnson was I believe only in one debate and he wasn't that great.

Paul has good ideas but his speaking style leaves much to be desired IMO.
