| California outlaws so called "gay cure" (Posted on 10/4/12 at 2:17 pm)
LINK Not sure how I feel about this. Yeah, I know they are crocks of crap. However, the law allows lots of crocks of crap things. On a side note, I hope insurance companies to not pay for this... However, back on topic. Should the state outlaw these types of things? I mean if someone wants to stick themselves with needles or let someone else stick them with needles, it is allowed. While I understand that this type of therapy does not work, does that still mean you should outlaw it? How about outlawing it for minors? Parents can't send their children to these types of things. But if an adult wishes to go, even to something that doesn't work or is unpleasant, why should the law say it is illegal? What says the poliboard? Or is everyone discussing the debate? And where is toddy? Shouldn't he be starting this?

i think it's utterly ridiculous that people even think to outlaw stuff like this "consumer protection" is a scam

what is to stop you from going to Nevada or any other state. So what is the point of passing such a law?

These are not just consumer protection laws. These camps put children who are gay through a lot of trauma trying to change them when in fact they can not be changed. And some parents are stupid and want to put children through these types of things. In a situation similar to munchausen by proxy where a parent misleads medical personel causing their child to have painful procedures, this is causing their children to have something painful done as well. However, if an adult wants to go for it, I think I am ok with it.

I don't think they should outlaw this type of thing, and I don't know how laws currently are, but I do think you should have the consent of the minor. I hated psychology, but we did talk about conversion therapy once. My professor stated that the success rate for willing participants were around 50%. Now I've heard some people say that these type of programs are disgusting, but if that's truly what the individual want, then who the frick are you to say otherwise?

I can't imagine an adult actually thinking someone else can change their sexuality, but maybe there are some who do. Seems like it would mostly affect kids being sent by parents who can't accept who they are. Gay kids have a hard enough time growing up without some quack fricking with their heads. As someone else said, consent from the minor should be required.

In these situations, I have no trouble outlawing it as stated above.

No go in my opinion. The parent can obviously exert control over the child. And there consent from the minor? The minor isn't seen as being able to give consent, so why should that change here? No for children. If an adult is stupid enough to try it, then they can do whatever they want to.

Why? Because it doesn't work.
quote:
becuase you dont like it?
Because I don't think insurance should pay for stupid things that don't work. That is the way it works for everything else. Why not this? Now if you want to pay out of pocket, fine.

Well, I am straight and about to get married. Why would I do something like that? Why are you being a drama queen?

Not really. High school was good. College was better. Life actually has gotten better though I enjoyed it before.

What about sending kids to "fat Camps" to correct the eating/exercise habits? Some can argue this is similar

totally different.

People who lack insight (me being nice) may argue that. Certainly no one with intelligence would argue that. If you can't see the difference, just say and I will tell you why it is different. Otherwise, don't say it could be argued because unless you want to lose, it can not be argued.

and San Francisco outlawed toys with happy meals ...... in both cases it is the "State" overriding parents. put another way it is elevating the judgement of the collective over the free will of the individual. that is communism plain and simple.
