Which BGE is $1000. I know nothing about these things, but know the local distributor here. Intrested in seeing how much they are marked up.

The only two models I can find in Lafayette are the BGE and Kamado. The two units look very similar.

You can order Primo from amazon with free shipping/no tax.

re: Big Green Egg or Knock Off

I bought an XL for about 1100 a few months ago. No stand and it's just sitting on a concrete patio. When I move I may build a nice table for it to sit in.

For now, I just take my LSU folding beach chair outside and sit near it. I'm pretty much at the same level if I stood next to one in a nest. With the weather getting colder, it's nice to sit out with a drink (whiskey, wine or beer) and roast a chicken. I can adjust the vents without moving and enjoy the weather or read a book.

Another favorite is paella on the BGE. There are a lot of steps and it's perfect for sitting outside and going through the process. I use my wife as the runner to bring things back and forth to the kitchen while I cook.

As to the OP, I would go with the BGE or another of the big brands. I think warranty and quality is the key. It may have cost $1100 (or a large for $300 less), but I know I'll have it for the next 20 years. If anything breaks, replacement is supposedly fairly hassle free. I've gone from a gas grill to the BGE and now I get angry if the weather keeps me from grilling at least 3 times a week.

Spatchcock chicken (cut the back bone out and open it up and grill bones down) is incredible. Last night I worked late and grabbed a rotisserie chicken from the grocery story. Not bad as usual, but not even close to the BGE. I've gone from someone who only really liked the dark meat on roasted chickens to loving the white meat. So much juicier. It's really a different product.

Spend the money if you have it. If not, wait a couple of months and save. It's worth it.

It was the large. I think the egg was $750 and the stand was $250.

The large is $750 but you'll spend $1000 by the time you get out of the store. The XL is right around 1100. Gonna spend about $1500 on that one after it's all said and done with stand, accessories, etc..

The BGE I am looking at is the large with a stand and two side tables for $1000.

What else do I need to buy?

The plate setter used for indirect heat is usually the first thing folks here will recommend as an accessory to the BGE. You can read about it on the BGE website/forums. You might want to sign up for the forums on that site.

Get a platesetter from the get go for sure. Also going to need that ash tool thing. I also use my grid extender at least 50% of the time. Those 3 things are what I consider must haves.

The Big Green Egg is the biggest scam since Golden Corrals endless Tilapia buffet. I could make a BGE in 30 minutes with a hanger, a sautering iron, and 6lbs of stainless steel

I hear ya!

I made one this morning out of an old washing machine and a radiator grate from a '65 Pontiac.

What is a grid extender? I can't find it on the BGE website.

What happens with the dripping when using a placesetter? Any cleaning involved?

Here's pics of the extender. It's quite useful.

I don't clean the plate setter. I might scrape it from time to time of any black stuff, but I don't really clean it otherwise.

Stine's has a red Kamado for $800 and Mike Baker has the BGE for $1000. I'll probably go with the BGE so I can buy local and hopefully I will get a better product/support.

stines is local.

I'm going to jump in like I've done on a few of these threads and suggest you look at pellet smokers. I have the Jim Bowie Green Mountain Grill and I absolutely love it. It's about as user friendly as can be. You set the temp (digital readout) , stick the meat thermometer in (connects to the digital temp monitor) and sit back and have a drink or two. I love mine.

Oh and if I remember correctly mine was $700.

Skip the ash tool. Get a small shopvac... You can get more use out of it and it's much faster

Buy a set of lodge leather cooking gloves.. After you get done cooking turn the plate setter upside down and burn off anything that dripped.

Ive got a Kamodo Joe and its great. I use it a ton great quality and they don't nickel and dime you like BGE does. I would also go with the XL no matter which brand you get thats the only thing I don't like about mine is the space limitation. Got it at Tramontes in BTR. Good people over there
