I'm not going to call him a "liar", but I'm going to do my best to explain the 716 billion or so that he keeps saying Obama wants to cut. And I'm shooting from the hip here, so bear with me and cut me some slack.

So as part of paying for Obamacare, they plan to "spend less" on Medicare. Not "cut", but "spend less". Those "savings" will go toward Obamacare so it doesn't look like it is completely unpaid for. How they propose to "spend less" is by forcing hospitals to be more efficient, and some other crap I can't remember off of the top of my head. I put all this stuff in quotes because none of is really true. It is all some accounting tricks that make a lot of assumptions and never work out.

So what Romney is calling "cuts", aren't really cuts because they will never really happen. Romney needs to get off this medicare crap and frankly should have answered the Social Security question that Lehrer asked.

Yeah, Romney's going to cut all that tax and not affect the deficit because the economy will be doing better and generating more revenue.

seems legit.

CNN did a little blurb right after the debate saying that Romney's claim that the number of unemployed individuals under Obama has risen to 23 million. They showed that the only way you can get to that figure is to stretch the meaning of unemployment extremely thin - which includes counting people who are underemployed.

You can't claim that the economy is going to improve by fiat. He is counting on paying for his tax cuts because of economic growth that may or may not happen. All policy choices look good if you assume economic growth. It does not make them good policy.

What about the willfully unemployed? I remember a bunch of videos of a certain group of people talking about not having to work anymore not that there's a black man for president.

The internet boom and the information age helped in generating revenue.

Unless Romney is keeping some economic revolution under wraps, I just don't see how he could make these claims.

I don't know. I was just answering the man's questions.

CNN dubbed it as a false statement and provided the numbers to show it was false. At the very least, it was stretched beyond the truth.

What other reason was he elected in 2008? What platform specifics did he run on? What has he delivered that was promised?

He was also lumping SS into the general fund. Baby boomers weren't retiring left and right yet.

I think the country can accept some higher taxes as long as it is done incrementaly. I think everyone understands that the defecit is a big shite sandwich and everyone has to take a bite. It isn't a few % points of taxes that is scaring business, it is not knowing what will happen. If there were just a little stability, companies could paln better.

We just need a politician with some nards who is willing to explain this.

It's ok. I know having to defend your political viewpoints with little more than the lint in your pockets becomes difficult...I wont pick on you too bad.

He wasn't a Republican after 8 years of Bush. He also promised a turn back to realism in foreign policy, which I personally believed he delivered on. He also did the whole healthcare thing. Again, through, I am not really a typical Democratic voter. I am personally much more anti current Republicans than I am pro Obama.

Because, you know, that segment of the economy has struggled the last 4 years.

considering it will add jobs and income to the economy in terms of people working and taxes...

Why is this a bad thing?

Seriously...it will ADD money, not TAKE money as in the failed green energy projects.

Do you even care about the results to proposals in terms of efficacy, or just your emotional response?

You can't possibly think his foreign policy has had positive results.

It's like magic!

Has Romney stated the specifics of how this will work and generate more revenue or are you just pulling this out of his vague explanations?

And I think Romney would need congressional support on this as well.

ones that seem legit:

quote:

2) “I don’t have a $5 trillion tax cut. I don’t have a tax cut of a scale that you’re talking about.” A Tax Policy Center analysis of Romney’s proposal for a 20 percent across-the-board tax cut in all federal income tax rates, eliminating the Alternative Minimum Tax, eliminating the estate tax and other tax reductions, would reduce federal revenue $480 billion in 2015. This amount to $5 trillion over the decade.
3) “My view is that we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class. But I’m not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high-income people.” If Romney hopes to provide tax relief to the middle class, then his $5 trillion tax cut would add to the deficit. There are not enough deductions in the tax code that primarily benefit rich people to make his math work.
4) “My — my number-one principal is, there will be no tax cut that adds to the deficit. I want to underline that: no tax cut that adds to the deficit.” As the Tax Policy Center concluded, Romney’s plan can’t both exempt middle class families from tax cuts and remain revenue neutral. “He’s promised all these things and he can’t do them all. In order for him to cover the cost of his tax cut without adding to the deficit, he’d have to find a way to raise taxes on middle income people or people making less than $200,000 a year,” the Center found.
5) “I will not under any circumstances raise taxes on middle-income families. I will lower taxes on middle-income families. Now, you cite a study. There are six other studies that looked at the study you describe and say it’s completely wrong.” The studies Romney cites actually further prove that Romney would, in fact, have to raise taxes on the middle class if he were to keep his promise not to lose revenue with his tax rate reduction.

continuously stating an impossible tax plan is possible just because he says it is possible ("my huge tax cuts will remain revenue neutral because i said it would!") is at best misleading, but i think should count as a lie.

quote:

6) “I saw a study that came out today that said you’re going to raise taxes by $3,000 to $4,000 on middle-income families.” Romney is pointing to this study from the American Enterprise Institute. It actually found that rather than raise taxes to pay down the debt, the Obama administration’s policies — those contained directly in his budget — would reduce the share of taxes that go toward servicing the debt by $1,289.89 per taxpayer in the $100,000 to $200,000 range

can't really make heads or tails of the study cited, but it doesn't seem to say 3k tax increase. probably a lie there.

quote:

8) “Mr. President, all of the increase in natural gas and oil has happened on private land, not on government land. On government land, your administration has cut the number of permits and licenses in half.” Oil production from federal lands is higher, not lower: Production from federal lands is up slightly in 2011 when compared to 2007. And the oil and gas industry is sitting on 7,000 approved permits to drill, that it hasn’t begun exploring or developing.

seems like a straight out lie.
quote:

9) “The president’s put it in place as much public debt — almost as much debt held by the public as all prior presidents combined.” This is not even close to being true. When Obama took office, the national debt stood at $10.626 trillion. Now the national debt is over $16 trillion. That $5.374 trillion increase is nowhere near as much debt as all the other presidents combined.

clear lie.
