re: Obama just now: "Not the Real Mitt Romney last night"

quote:

I'm pretty sure the Solyndra deal was a Bush thing.

Wrong. The Energy Department created the loan guarantee program as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This was done with Bush as President. Solyndra was not awarded a loan from this program while Bush was in office. In fact, the Bush Administration did not actually award one loan under this program. Obama added to the Energy Policy Act by adding section 1705. Solyndra applied for the loan based on section 1705 and was awarded a loan based on that.
quote:

Besides that, Solyndra received only a small fraction of the money

$535 million is a lot of money, especially when Solyndra went bankrupt shortly after.

quote:

I guess I don't understand the point. Should all energy investments go to teachers instead?

No, Obama said he wanted more teachers. But, instead of hiring more teachers, he gave it to green energy companies that have ties back to his campaign.

I am 1000000% certain you are factually incorrect. The Bush administration refused, multiple times, to give Solyndra taxpayer money
Link? Everything I've found says that the Bush administration (which definitely got the ball rolling on the clean energy stuff) definitely supported the Solyndra deal.

The Walton family (R.) was also a big investor in Solyndra. It appeared at the time to be a solid investment to people in both parties. I just don't get why it's such a huge talking point.

stop reading thinkprogress....

The DOE loan program that funded Solyndra was actually started by President Bush in 2005. It was intended to provide government support for "innovative technologies."

But the Bush administration never approved Solyndra's loan, saying the application needed more work.

Link?

LINK

quote:

But the facts don’t justify this claim. The bottom line remains that the Bush Administration did not approve the Solyndra loan guarantee. And just before they headed out of town, Bush officials ordered the project back to the drawing board.

Democrats argue the Energy Department first received the loan request in December 2006. By January 2009, it was still under consideration. That month, the department’s Loan Guarantee Credit Committee put the project on hold.

In a terse one-page memo, dated Jan. 9, 2009, the committee noted that the “apparent haste in recommending the project meant that certain LGPO (Loan Guarantee Program Office) credit procedures were not adhered to.”

It further stated that: “While the project appears to have merit, there are several areas where the information presented did not thoroughly support a finding that the project is ready to be approved at this time.” It then cited four areas of concern.

First was the lack of any “independent market study addressing long-term prospects for this specific company.” An independent credit assessment had “raised the issue of obsolescence in marketing this project.” Obsolescence? That’s never a good word to hear in a product marketing study.

Second, it noted that the committee had never seen a supposed sales agreement the company had for its product even though an unnamed “outside legal advisor” had. In other words, the committee only had vague assurances that there was even a buyer for the product.

Third, it noted, “There are questions regarding the nature and the strength of parent guarantee for completion of the project.” In other words, the committee wasn’t convinced the project would even be finished.

Fourth and finally, it vaguely noted “concern” over production start “scale-up” at a second Solyndra facility.

The memo concludes by saying “the number of issues unresolved makes a recommendation for approval premature at this time” and sent the project back to the LGPO for “further development of information.”

then you're a liar...I just googled "Obama green energy bankrupt"

Here is ONE article of many:
quote:

Solar-cell manufacturer Solyndra became a household name when it collapsed, taking $627 million in American taxpayer dollars with it. It’s the poster company for the government picking winners and losers—or really, just losers—in the energy market. But there are 12 more “green energy” losers that have declared bankruptcy despite attempts to prop them up with taxpayer money—and the list is growing.

I had already read that article, and I know the loan wasn't approved under Bush. Everything just points toward a deal being made under Bush if he had another year or two in office. That's all I was saying.

From the same article:
quote:

Taxpayers aren't the only losers: Private investors lost almost twice what the government did -- nearly $1 billion.
and
quote:

No smoking gun with Solyndra wrongdoing: Last week, Mitt Romney said an inspector general "looked at this investment and concluded that the administration had steered money to friends and family."
That appears to be incorrect, as no evidence of undue influence peddling by the White House has been uncovered in an official, independent report.
and
quote:

It was the rapidly declining price of traditional, flat solar panels and silicon -- mostly from China -- that did the company in.
says to me that it was an investment that just went downhill. High risk, high reward. It happens.

BTW, I am solidly on the fence here, and I really, really want to be convinced to vote for Romney.

This is all spot on as well. I said last night, less than 10 minutes into the debate, Romney has scrapped his plan because it was so bad and was losing him the election, and is going to try to go in another direction.

Truly pathetic. Be careful Tiger n Miami, you keep stretching like this and you are going to pull a hammy.

But he couldn't be....and wouldnt approve the loan when he wa sin office.

To claim he would, when he legally couldnt...is ridiculous.

Yeah, MONEY THEY FREELY INVESTED. Obama wasted TAXPAYER dollars. Do you understand the difference?

lulz. The people who ran Solyndra are major Obama campaign bundlers. THAT is a fact. It really isnt at argument.

lulz. The company wasnt approved by Bush because they knew they couldnt compete with China.

High risk/high reward works well with your own money. Using taxpayer dollars...

Here is ONE article of many:
I am going through the list of the 12 companies (less than half, and far from "most" of the companies that got loans) mentioned in that article, and it seems to be pretty haphazardly assembled. One of them applied for, but never received, funds. One of them was bought out and about 70% of the funds received will likely be repaid. None of them come close to the amount lost on Solyndra.

I don't like my taxes going to waste, either. I think the whole program (again, started under Bush) obviously had good intentions, but I don't think it's something government should be meddling in. I don't think it's some huge $90billion sinkhole that some make it out to be, though. Much of the money went to some successful companies, such as Ford, Nissan and Tesla Motors.

OK, you got me. I really want to vote for the best man for the job. Who that is, I honestly don't know.

You guys are hilarious. You all act like it's plainly obvious that Obama has been a gigantic failure. You also act like the president has the power to just shape the country and the world as he sees fit. Would McCain or anyone else have done a better job these last 4 years, dealing with a global economic crisis, expensive wars, terrorism, etc.?

To me it seems like whoever is in office is merely a puppet who says and does whatever will make his party happy and rich. I don't think that will change until we have another revolution.

but mcCain isnt running in 2012. OBAMA won in 2008. The last 4 years of high unemployment, pathetic growth, etc..

ARE ON HIM. THEY ARE HIS RECORD.

deal with it. You have a choice to vote for the current failed president or somebody else.

Which are you planning to choose?

This is exactly what I was talking about. Do you think any one man can just say "let it be done" and reduce unemployment? The vast majority of the rise in unemployment happened before Obama took office, and has been declining since shortly after. I don't think he was the cause, nor was he the solution. He was the guy that was there during a global economic downturn.

I don't know the answer, and the Romney circlejerk here doesn't do much to help me out.

Well maybe it helps to mention that the best idea Obama's administration had was to inject 800 billion into a black hole to repair a few roads and was supposed to keep unemployment below 8%.

Let's try someone who has other ideas for the economy rather than Keynesian theory.
