The individual mandate was brought forward by the wise Republicans in 1993-4 as a alternative to Clintoncare. It originated among some of the most conservative economists as a way to stop freeloading. What has changed since then??

Why do they all run from it now?
Obama?

I don't think the mandate would be necessary provided there were sufficient conditions for coverage of preexisting conditions. Whether both parties would be be willing to agree to those conditions is of course questionable.

Okay what about Republicans in 1994 at the FEDERAL level. This state idea, which is silly, is a new idea by Mitt.

I think that all people should have some basic level of coverage that includes preventative care. Preventative care is where you can really see some savings.

I would love to for everyone to have "preventive care" but honestly, we dont have the system, doctors, nurses and facilities to meet the demand, especially when the governmental pay structure disincentives doctors.

so it was a more conservative option for an isolated period of political turmoil

how is that relevant to 2012?

1st, that was 28 years ago

2nd, that was in response to a much more liberal plan

this is like bush expanding medicare Rx coverage when the alternative was a much more expensive DEM plan (not that i excuse bush for this frickup)

Was it ever brought to floor? was it every brought into committee? It was an option and a topic of discussion but was never a viable option for the Republicans.

Because we have the same problems but greater. And are we not in political turmoil now? Does economics just change where ideas would no longer work?

the problems with the health care industry are rooted in the involvement of government

how does adding government solve anything?

this wasn't economics. that's the point. this was political back and forth

The mandate was looked at as a way to solve the freerider problem (Olson, 1965 for discussion of freerider issue.)

the free rider problem of a BAD legislative proposal

again, this is just an example of government fricking up a system, with the solution being...more government

it's a perfect example. why do you think government will magically solve the problems it creates?

I think that expanding coverage in the long run decreases medical costs. I am for expanding coverage. Present me a way to do that efficiently and I will support it.

Don't let your insurance lapse?

It's really not that hard.

Proposing it as a model and implementing it are two different things. Perhaps he's "evolved".

re: What is Romney's plan for pre-existing conditions?

quote:

I think that expanding coverage in the long run decreases medical costs

why?

the problem with our medical system is people don't appreciate the cost of it, b/c they're removed from the price

people (through insurance given via employment due to government policy and public insurance like medicaid) have been conditioned to NOT care about the cost of treatment, and that they can do bad stuff to their body with no care over the costs

how will EXPANDING coverage save costs? why won't it do exactly what we've seen this concept do: increases costs through inefficient medical choices AND an incentive to not care for your body? how does that make sense?

quote:

Present me a way to do that efficiently and I will support it.

remove government from health care by slashing medicaid and medicare

remove government from health care further by removing the incentive for employers to provide health insurance

push health savings accounts and high deductible plans that are affordable and make people pay for minor care, while being insured for major medical disasters.

individuals will have to pay for their health care, which will incentivize avoiding wasteful treatment AND healthier lives

Personal responsibility? What a novel concept.
