| Looking to buy first bow (Posted on 10/4/12 at 11:32 am)
I'm going to buy my first bow soon, what does the OB recommend? Looking to spend UP TO $1000. Everybody where I'm from buys Mathews but I'm beginning to wonder if its similar to people buying iPhone's, they only use Mathews because of the name not necessarily performance.

Pretty much. A couple people here own Bears and really like them.

My first advice is to go to a pro shop and shoot as many brands as you can. A bow that I love, you may hate. The most important thing is to pick a bow that you shoot well. On the Mathews question, any late model bow you buy is going to be high quality. I shoot a Mathews for a few reasons. 1) I prefer the draw cycle on a single cam bow 2) regardless of what anyone tells you, a single cam bow is easier to tune 3) when a dual cam bow gets out of tune (all bows will due to string/cable stretch) it can cause major issues with fall away rests, fletching contact etc. This is not nearly as much of an issue with a single cam 4) Mathews warranty is second to none. If your bow has an issue they are pretty good about fixing it, no question asked. Bear and PSE have some nice looking bows in their 2013 lineup. Every bow manufacturer will release their 2013 lineup between now and the middle of November. You may be better served waiting on the 2013s. If you don't want to wait at least use that to try to negotiate a little better price

ppl use mathews because of longevity, durabity and performance. I have only owned Mathews. Having said that, there are a lot of good brands these days.

Look into mission, it is a subset of mathews. Its the older bows that are still awesome but not the latest and greatest. Seriously look into it. Its like the best thing no body knows about. Mission I bought mine at TP in west monroe 3 years ago when the "brand" was relatively new, i went back this year and he said they are actually outselling the new Mathews right now.

Mathews also donates all profits from Mission Archery to missionaries.

Look at it this way, you can buy a hoyt, pse, bear, or a bowtech and not be happy with it. Or you can just buy the Mathews first and save some money.. Like i have said before there are people who own Mathews, and people who own other bows till the can get a Mathews.

I've never heard of Mission but it sounds like a good deal. Their website says they have a new bow out for this year for only $400. I will hunt alot but there are also many a tournement around the Washington Parish area where I'd shoot as well.

:raiseshand: With that budget though I may have gone bowtech. I dunno, I didn't shoot any bows out of my price range so I have no dog in this fight.

I've been wanting one for a while and some guys at work talking about their hunts have made me want one bad. I've seen plenty of used bows but I'm a big ole bastard and I'm gonna need a 30" draw. All I've seen is 27" in adjustable. My family has Matthews and stand firm on em, I'll go the same route.

My Bear Encounter can adjust to 31" I believe. I got it because I thought I needed 30.5" but I measured wrong and I'm 29.5"

It's by height isn't it? I'm 6'3" I took a guys word for it when he told me 30" I'm going to shop around and talk to some pro's before I jump into it.

You can estimate by height but it really depends on your wingspan, and how you wear your release plays a part too. I'm 6'2.5" a with the d loop and release it's perfect for me. My last bow was at 30" though

Measure your wingspan middle fingertip to middle fingertip and divide by 2.5. This will get you very close. I'm 6'3" and shoot at 30"

Love my Hoyt. I shot the mathews Z7 extreme and it was nice, but Hoyt felt the best to me.

Buy a cheaper ring and order a Tiffany's box off the internets, then buy a bow. No one will ever know!!
