re: Good low recoil rifle for 8 year old to grow into?

I killed my first deer at age 8 with a 30-30. I used it until I was 10 and then switched to a Remington 7600 30-06. I was not big for my age by any means but I was not small either. I practiced A LOT with a 10/22 so I knew how to shoot. I then shot my hunting rifle just a few times before the season to get used to the exact rifle. I was never overexposed to the recoil so it never bothered me.

If you want to give him a .270 I have an A-Bolt medallion with boss and a scope I'll sell ya. With the boss the recoil is almost zero. It's loud as hell, but doesn't kick at all.

Like I said, I have a 270 for him in a couple of years

This purchase will probably be used for a few years and then handed down

Nope. I killed my first deer at 5 yrs old with a .410 slug. The next couple years I shot my Dad's Jam-master 30-06. When I was 9 I was given a Model 700 .270. It's still in my truck.

Can you get a youth stock to fit him in the 270 you have? Then put the original stock back when he gets taller.

I looked at the Remington 700 SPS youth and Weatherby Vanguard youth both in .243. Both are awesome guns for 8-12 year olds…bought the Remington because of the action being smoother and fit him better.

Don't get a 243. You're welcome.

I also shoot a .270 a-bolt stainless stalker with the boss and it doesn't kick but the damn muzzle blast is insane.

I still got my Ruger M7 .270 I was killing deer with at 9 or so... Full size, but like you I was lanky and could hold it with a rest. I know I started sitting by myself at 12. That was a big step.

I may get reamed like I did on other sites for making this suggestion, but I bought my 7 YO an H&R 44 mag.

I put a nice Nikon on top and can use it for primitive season, too.

I've killed out to 140 yards with it. And my boy killed a doe at 60 yards when he was 7.

My father bought a .257 for my sister and I when we were kids. He got the stock cut down for us. That rifle has killed the most animals than any other rifle we own. My dad uses it now because he broke his back last year when he fell from the deer stand. He said the 30-06 kicked too much.

It's shot placement that matters but I have seen the 243 fail too many times. Bullet Did not open just went right through and no exit wound . I got my wife away from the z308 bruiser and into a 7mm-08 Remington, that is a killing machine.

My wife shoots a Ruger M77 in .257 Roberts. It is more obscure now than the 7mm-08 or the .243 (both are great as well). The .257 really is a fun gun to shoot and it is a killing machine. I steal it for shooting whitetails now, it is just too cool.

My niece has been shooting a .243 for about several years, and taken 7 deer with it. She started out shooting Remington CORE-LOKT 100 grain…but now shoots the Barnes VOR-TX 80 Grain Triple-Shock. The two she shot last year never moved more than 3 feet.
