I have similar feelings, but note that both parties are guilty of this. Romney's 47% remark whereby he implies that half of American's are irresponsible government cheese recipients is a good example.
My theory is that most American's are neither far right or far left. The majority I hypothesize are somewhere in the middle.
The tragedy of American politics is that the two parties have aligned themselves at the opposite ends of the spectrum. This is why I choose to vote by issue rather than party lines. Until such time as a third party arises or the parties move back into the center there will be this divisiveness you speak of.
